"it’s time to focus the energy and brain power of NASA on our own planet!"

No Way, Shuttle burnups, Not soil trained robots. Pedicting climate warming, when the 800 year resident descendants of Ghengis are being frozen out.

Many comments on whether water on Mars will prove there is life there and will this disprove the Bible. One, Kaleth, says Christianity is mythology. But it's a mythology based in history- a little bit of a conflict there.
Now back to Mars- will we ever colonize Mars? We haven't even sent anyone to the Moon in YEARS! You think life is tough here- think about it in a such a hostile environment! We worry about cars getting 30 MPG- how many gallons of fuel to get to Mars?
In reality, it's time to focus the energy and brain power of NASA on our own planet! Develop real alternative fuels other than bio which burns as much fossil fuel as it does to create- and drives foot costs way up. It's time to research our oceans. It's time to develop save nuclear energy and fuel cell cars and lighter materials for cars and...
Yes, space exploration has been exciting and provided many benefits in the past but the present has MANY other needs.

This could very well be one of the greatest discoveries of NASA. The fact that ice does exist on Mars paves the way for the colonization of another planet. I only hope to see it in my lifetime.

Miles.........you were holding back from me! :-)
Did i just read that more tests were done on the soil showing certain vegies could possilbly thrive in that soil?? congrats to the group with this...and water vapor too! :-)

W. Rogers, I checked out your mentioned site.....some great books suggested for reading.......thrilled to know there is such an impressive group organized and educating...and then to learn you have a chapter in my area is better than finding ice on Mars (only joking Mr. Smith) .I particularly enjoyed reading the discussion blog for the Average Joe....Thanks for putting it out there.

"Why doesn’t NASA spend money in trying to improve the resources we have here? "

NASA is into that too:
Climate modelling Earth, with less accuracy than soil training on Mars.
'We're toast' without action on global warming - Jim Hansen NASA
I would answer that it is a big scale organized crime. - Luboš Motl

Next, NASA will be advising us to take a bath in a bathtub full of ice cubes !

phoenix schmoenix...just imagine the waste of billions of dollars for dumb project like this toy with a crippled shovel that takes weeks to scoop up some dirt. Why doesn't NASA spend money in trying to improve the resources we have here? With their money and brains, much of todays ecological problems would be solved in a jiffy if they wanted to...

For those who doubt that the ice is water ice, there is a good new summary on the Phoenix blog about why they have come to this conclusion:

http://phoenix.lpl.arizona.edu/blogsPost.php?bID=211

The CCD camera showed a water-type spectrum of the white patches. TEGA didn't see any ice because the sample sat out in the open sun for a few days before finally being dumped into the oven; any ice would have sublimated away already. Plus, it's not currently cold enough for CO2 ice and salts don't sublimate.

NASA releases a 300 x 300 (roughly) pixel photo of their greatest discovery to date. C'mon, this is a great discussion of physics, but shouldn't we be looking more at the (a) big picture? I'm skeptical, NASA has a reputation for gathering high-resolution data. Their released images of this "discovery" are laughable. We had better "proof" of WMD.
