Sony to launch challengers to iPad, iPhone

Posted: 12:26 PM ET

Sources have told the Wall Street Journal that Sony is planning on making a challenger to Apple’s iPad that will have all the capabilities of a netbook, a Sony Reader and a PSP, the company's handheld gaming device.

At a Sony news conference in Tokyo, Sony’s CFO Nobuyuki Oneda didn’t provide any details but expressed the company’s desire to compete against Apple’s newest gadget, due in stores next month.

"That is a market we are also very interested in. We are confident we have the skills to create a [great] product," said Oneda. "Time-wise, we are a little behind the iPad but it's a space we would like to be an active player in.”

The WSJ also reported Sony is making a new smartphone - containing Sony Ericsson mobile technology and capable of playing PSP games - to compete against the iPhone. Both devices are expected to work with Sony Online Services, an online store due to launch in March and sell music, movies, books, and other downloadable applications for mobile products.

The iPad challenger and the new smartphone are expected to launch sometime in 2010, but no details about specs, price or design have been released.

Sony has tried to get into the phone/gaming gadget arena in the past. A patent was filed in 2006 for a device that looked like a PSP on one side and a smartphone on the other, but such a device has never hit the market.

Apple sold 8.7 million iPhones in the last three months of 2009. The company announced Friday that the iPad will be available April 3.

Simply put, if the iPad had a USB port, I'd be sold on it but since it doesn't, I'll be looking at whatever Sony throws out to the masses. I simply want a portable lighter-than-a-netbook device to connect my camera to so I can easily review and offload my pictures.

tell you what sony is not going to have luck in it, as it lost against Microsoft in Xbox, I am not going to tell you the reason, because nobody is going to believe on it. Ask your self why sony being so long in the gaming station suddently lost again Microsoft which had not history in gaming stations?

This is typical of the japanese...Let somebody else invent it....copy the technology, and state "by golly weve been working on this too"..typical.......

It's about time Apple steps up their enforcement of their intellectual property rights. I can't believe the number of knock-off devices that have come out since the iPhone. Steve Jobs said it right, competition is healthy, but the competition should create their own technology. Otherwise, Apple, and others, will not invest the billions of dollars it takes to come up with great devices and technology just to have the next company take all of that and use it for their products.

"if the iPad had a USB port", what would you do with it? Load files onto it, grab files off of it? This is Apple we're talking about, land of "Prevent people from doing something stupid by locking them out."

Having a USB port alone would do nothing without changing the underlying concept of interacting with the device. It's not for general computing; it's for walled boxes inside a walled garden - very good for most activities of actual users.

I'm thinking anything Sony would offer would be the Betamax version of the iphone and ipad. While they do produce some decent products 'market leader' isn't something I think of when the name Sony comes up in conversation.
