There are ways this could be accomplished, but certainly NOT in the manner described. Two ground mounted cameras a fixed distance apart could recognize your car license plate at the two different locations and calculate how much time it took you to go the distance and could issue you a ticket based upon that information. THERE IS NO SYSTEM AVAILABLE THAT CAN READ LICENSE PLATES FROM SATELLITES. And the system I described would actually work at night and in bad weather. There are just so many things wrong with this story. Including the look down angles, etc.

All speed cameras should be illegal. If you lend someone your car you are liable for them speeding. Unless the actual driver can be identified by a police officer, the tickets should be voided.

Automated enforcement is only fair if your fine is reduced accordingly, and the speed limit is raised. The current speed limit and fine system reflect the probability of getting caught if you speed, plus the amount of grace over the limit cops will allow you.

Mashable/CNN...get your facts straight. You are not representing the details of the system accurately. Event the Telegraphy article only indicate two GROUND level camera and a GPS receiver (not a satellite mounted camera!). If you knew anything about satellite based remote sensing technologies, you would know that the orbital characteristics of low earth orbiting satellites make a satellite mounted camera NOT workable, not to mention the resolution and view angle limitations...get it right.....

I just read the technical specs on this thing. It works as I described. The two cameras are ground based a known distance apart and can read your license plate. The satellite is only used because it uses an extremely accurate clock that can be referenced by all the systems. It is the common timebase. THERE ARE NO CAMERAS ON THE SATELLITE.

nice. I like this idea. No average driver has any reason to be speeding putting their lives and the lives of others at risk. This reinforces the understanding that driving is a privilege, not a right.

It won't be a average between the camera's, the camera will start the track and record who you are then the sattelite will track your car and issue a ticket if you speed at any time, before it loses a good lock on your car, likely between a fixed area though.

It'll likely be using a radar system rather than visual to track the car.

Geo Stationary is to far out though, so it'll only work when a sattelite is directly over head.

But if you've got 2 fixed points with cameras then you don't need a sattelite they already do speeding fines like this, but you can do 80mph for a stretch then do 40mph for the same time and bring your average back to 60 easy enough.

This story is misleading at best. The satellite used are the standard GPS satellites and only used to provide time information to ground-based cameras. Unfortunate sensationalism.

Another example of big brother's grasp tightening, at least we don't have the same intrusive cameras in the U.S. that they have over there. I for one would refuse to pay such a ticket.

No camera will be used in space; have you seen the cost of putting a new satellite into orbit? Prohibitive for this application. The 2 cameras on the ground will use GPS receivers to synchronize their time clocks, so you can't claim unsync-ed clocks caused you to get an invalid citation. The "space camera" crap is simply shoddy reporting by CNN/Mashable.

In Norway this is done by several ground cameras. They calculate the average speed. No need for satellites. The technology is ready to use, but the government has not yet put it to work.

It's absolutely insane to think they're going to have one satellite up there for every single point they wish to monitor. Just one should be able to handle hundreds or thousands of individual locations, and the satellites themselves seem to be mostly for the purposes of communications, not actually monitoring your speed.

This is really pretty cheap. You just need two GPS enable cameras; $60 US each. Just google "GPS Camera" and you can see all the ones for sale. No satellite costs are involved. There will have to be some data processing afterwards to determine who was over the speed.

It's not true, it's hype! This is a global scare tactic to try and get people to slow down. It would take about a billion tickets to re-pay the expense of a system like this. Why else would they "advertise" it in the US?

I have to wonder if the cost of sending a satellite into orbit can really be offset by even A LOT of tickets?! Seems extreme to say the least. Is speeding really that big of a problem? Wouldn't it be cheaper and more cost effective over time to hire more police officers?

I really don't see what the problem is. This is nothing more and an advanced traffic camera, only it's in space and more expensive. Planes are sometimes used for the exact same thing here in the US.

I can see great possibilities for this to be expanded to monitor traffic pretty much anywhere with the use of additional satellites and cameras. It will also make radar detectors ineffective since people won't be able to tell when they are getting close to a patrol car lying in wait with a radar gun.

I have a feeling the people complaining about this are the same ones who complained when traffic cameras were first introduced. They are also most ikely the people who are prone to speed.

As for Franko, yeah satellites are 'green'. I almost lost my lunch over that one. Total nonsense to scare people off. The max visual resolution from the best satellites out there is about 0.5 meters (GeoEye). That means that a plate would look like a white pixel; good luck deciphering any letters or numbers. And no, they CAN'T take pics if it's cloudy or dark. The only truth is that a satellite could track a car and measure its speed, but what a ridiculous waste of everything!

Btw, on longer trips I highly doubt that lower speeds equals safety, since driver fatigue is the leading cause of fatal crashes. The longer and slower you drive the less focused and more bored you become.

There is no way that this is true as presented because it is scientifically impossible. In order for a satellite to be stationary, it has to be 22,300 miles above the equator. There is no orbit which puts it stationary over Britain.

With current GPS systems already showing your car speed and the speed limit side by side, all you need is a red flashing ticket coming on the GPS system saying "You just got a Ticket'. Make the car speed on the GPS flashing red when you go above the allowed speed limit and then 10 miles over that you get a ticket. GPS system to communicate to the local Sherrif's office and report the driver.

Other features like shutting the card down, if tickets are not paid in timely manner.

No cops needed on the road. Just mandatory GSP systems. Here comes the ACLU.

Whatever; I don't live there. But I would pose this point to any police department thinking of using this technology. If people realize that being caught speeding is no longer a risk, but a guarantee, they are going to stop. If they stop, that is less income for the given locality's police force. Good job guys. Is going 75MPH instead of 65MPH (or whatever) REALLY that big of a deal to law enforcement that they are going to give up that steady flow of cash?

Satellites are not in geostationary orbit over the UK – any satellite in a lower orbit has an orbital velocity – geostationary is only possible at zero degrees inclination. It would need multiple LEO (low earth orbit) satellites to remotely come close to accomplishing this (if they are implying the camera on the satellite is taking photographs of teh offenders. I am not buying any of that hype.

Already have something similar in Scotland called Average Speed Cameras calculating the distance between Camera A & Camera B & the time it should take between the two doing the speed limit (50mph). Also has ANPR (automated number plate recognition) so it tracks each car by it number plate from piont A to point B, no need for a satellite!

It would be a great idea for the US also, where we have too many drivers who do not pay attention to what is happening in front of them. Especially, women drivers who are paying to much attention to the mobile phone. Maybe this system can catch those who talk and drive and text and drive on the road.

Think about it, what if GPS data is collected and can be linked to car owners, they already have the disance the the time you travelled and what speed you travelled.

I am with the CJ regarding the technology. If the interest is reeeaally to reduce speed rather than to increase revenue then just simply put a transmitter on speed limit signs. Transmit a speed limit to a car which has a receiver where the driver can choose to use, or not. THEN put the stinking satellite in place to enforce it. I don't receive tickets for blatant disregard of posted speeds, I get them for not seeing every stinking sign indicating the speed changes. Phoenix is no better than London. Governments are addicted to this form of taxation.

This is crazy, It does have good points. But If this starts, What next? This is opening a doorway. Just think about it. Like how Oregon set up the voters to legalizing certain types of gambling so that they had control of it and would use the taxes to help out the school system, by adding it to what they were already getting.That's all it was to be used for. This article doesn't explain the need for a satellite or the way it is used in this system.

You just can't take picture of a license plate from a satelite on a regular basis as needed for speed ticketing so it should have an other purpose. Is it to compute the average speed? If you need the ground cameras to find the driver, they can as well compute the average speed by themselves.

Last time we bumped into such desire to control people, it resulted into World War II. We fought evil. In Florida they installed red-light cameras at intersections, trying to "prevent red light runners". As it turned out later, they have not even covered the 2 left lanes with the cameras, concentrating their efforts on those who did not make a full stop while turning right on red (which is legal in the US). If you go back to the source article on Mashable, you'll find that its says that it uses two cameras on the ground and one satellite to issue tickets. Not two cameras on the ground and one camera on a satellite.

A quick google search (I found the marketing material for the system) showed that the system works by using the GPS time clock to time stamp license plate pictures at various points. These pictures are then stored in a server. The system knows the distance between points . It can work out the legal time it should take you and compare it to what it took you. If you made it too fast, ticket.

That's a lot more boring than what the writer made it sound like! Not much different than the systems already in place in the UK.

Why are certain countries so FIXATED on speeders. Germans have been driving fast (double the average speed limits in most countries) and have the lowest accident fatality rate on comparison to other first world countries. It's obviously very expensive to research design and put a darn satellite in outer space. Is this really necessary? Are there not better things to worry about?

Try driver education first as most motorist (outside of Germany) are idiots who know nothing about car control. It's NOT the speed, It's the person driving. The idea sounds impressive enough but wouldn't that make ticketing a bit more hectic? I am more interested in looking forward to implementation of ticketing systems in cars too, where drivers can be warned of crossing speed limits and issues a ticket for not complying to the warning.

US Congress won't need satellites....what do you think the I-Pass and other open-road tollways trackers are for or the various proposals to track miles driven so a non-gas, gas tax can be enforced. Just Google 'PIPS Technology speedspike' and find the real information. There is no camera "mounted on a satellite" and authorities aren't watching "from outer space". The ground cameras used GPS to fix their position and sync time as part of their speed calculations.
