Texting during sex? Some say it's OK

Posted: 12:07 PM ET

It may sound ridiculous, but a few blogs today are considering this question:

Is it appropriate to send or receive text messages during sex?

The chatter is a spin-off from a 1,000-person survey, published in March, which found about one in 10 people younger than 25 say that they would not mind being "interrupted by an electronic message" during sex.

Among people older than 25, 6 percent said they would be fine with that inconvenience, according to the online survey by Retrevo, a website that reviews consumer electronics.

The survey reports a 4 percent error margin.

About a quarter of people in the under-25 group said they wouldn't mind getting a text message or e-mail while using the restroom (the chart actually says "on the John," but can we all agree to boycott that phrase?). And half of the younger people said they would be OK with a digital intrusion into a meal.

Older people were less fond of this all-the-time messaging. Sixty-two percent of people older than 25 said they don't like being interrupted by digital communications in general.

Maybe there's a serious conversation to be had somewhere in these salacious details.

Do you find electronic messages intruding in on your life?

Would you text during dinner with a friend? Are there any limits?

As food for thought, here's an interesting video debate about some of these issues between NYT blogger Nick Bilton and Diane Sawyer, the ABC anchor.

I see the future now: "@Kristie: OMG OMG Y Y Y Y Y Y Y!"

Aimee   May 6th, 2010 1:02 pm ET

The potential reason behind the disparity between the two age group may be due to the type of text messages they usually receive. The messages of those under 25 may be mostly personal in nature while those 26 up be mostly work-related. People who are working rarely like their personal time be interrupted by work outside the workplace.

Der! De Dippity Derp De Der!

davec   May 6th, 2010 1:46 pm ET

Mom used to say don't bother animals when they are eating. Don't bother ME when I'm eating. In fact, don't call or text me unless it's an emergency. I don't want to talk to you or anyone else.

davec   May 6th, 2010 1:47 pm ET

Now sod off.

Sy2502   May 6th, 2010 2:02 pm ET

If you feel like texting while having sx you need to find yourself a better lover.

CristinaHoule   May 6th, 2010 2:08 pm ET

This is crazy the whole texting thing. Most of the time I don't find it appropriate at any time of the day unless it is an emergency plus it takes up too much of my time.

Joe   May 6th, 2010 2:23 pm ET

Hmmm I find the idea of banging away while some dumb chick is texting her friends to be highly arousing.

if you are able to text while doing the deed, it ain't lookin good.

scott   May 6th, 2010 2:39 pm ET

I don't own a cell phone but I thought only little teen girls text? The future looks scary if everybody is going to texting and facebook'ing each other (I don't own one of those either)

Marco Polo   May 6th, 2010 2:41 pm ET

Talking about a mood killer, If I was ever with a woman who actually wanted to text during that time then you know what your realtionship is...I dont need to say more

Fred Farkel   May 6th, 2010 2:42 pm ET

Typical 20-something morons.

IllIlI   May 6th, 2010 2:45 pm ET

20-something kid texting his 20-something friend:
"I have to put what?!, WHERE?!"

J.R.   May 6th, 2010 2:46 pm ET

When I make love with someone I am focused on them. Perhaps if you are not, you might want to consider a new mate – because you had better know your partner is.

V8A   May 6th, 2010 2:48 pm ET

That is just sad...

vikki   May 6th, 2010 2:48 pm ET

I definitely would NOT welcome the intrusion during an intimate moment. If my partner stopped to read/respond to the text, that would be it for me. Ridiculous!

maranatha   May 6th, 2010 2:52 pm ET

Dirty world .. What else can we expect !!

Bobbym   May 6th, 2010 2:52 pm ET

Is it ok to text that you are "faking an orgasm"? How would you text that? FO!!!FO!!!!

non-sense   May 6th, 2010 2:53 pm ET

No one is interrupted by a call, text or instant message these days unless they want to be. These aren't the days of rotary phones and no answering machines or voicemail. To say, "Interrupted by a text message" is non-sense. Only people who WANT to be interrupted by a phone call or text are actually interrupted. The phone is not in the same room (or just off) problem solved.

Jason   May 6th, 2010 2:54 pm ET

Oh my God? You're pregnant? I must have forgotten to put a condom on because I was texting.....

RAblackmail   May 6th, 2010 2:55 pm ET

Isn't that how they do it in Demolition Man?

BOB   May 6th, 2010 2:58 pm ET

HEY, IT MAY GIVE YOU THAT EXTRA 15MINS LOL, SERIOUSLY PEOPLE? SLAVES TO YOUR CELL PHONES. COME RUNNING EVERYTIME IT RINGS! GIVE ME A BREAK! IMA START IGNORING IT JUST TO SCREW THIS STATISTIC!

Matt   May 6th, 2010 3:00 pm ET

Is it okay to text while pleasuring yourself? Just saying.

Dlishh   May 6th, 2010 3:02 pm ET

If you are texting during the deed, chances are it isn't very good. I think that may be time for that person to re-evaluate their love-life. I don't want to have anything else on my mind BUT the task at hand :)

The One and Only   May 6th, 2010 3:03 pm ET

TexterA: "So. What's it like?"

John   May 6th, 2010 3:05 pm ET

You can screw ME or the cell phone, but not both! I WILL NOT COMPETE WITH A "TEXTAHOLIC" on a CELL PHONE!

Brandon   May 6th, 2010 3:07 pm ET

I'm 30, and don't own any phone other than the one in my home. I did, however, carry a cell phone for 11 years before giving it up (3 years clean). I am constantly amazed by the number of teenagers and 20 somethings I see completely ignoring the people around them while they socialize on their phone. Talk to each other, there are real life people all around you. You won't make it far without real social skills.

Food for thought: Why take your stress with you when you leave the house? It'll be there waiting for you. Parents, does the fact your teenager carries a phone mean they're not getting into trouble? I certainly did while carrying mine, checked in frequently too (Before I had it the rules/curfews/boundaries were much stricter).

larry wi   May 6th, 2010 3:08 pm ET

Not that this has ever happened to me, but I know of gals who have been found to be reading and or watching TV while their guy delivers the mail, so I guess it would be the girls doing the texting?

Steve in CT   May 6th, 2010 3:10 pm ET

Do they mean texting to eachother while doing the deed?

"I love you, Shirley".... send

My name is Samantha, you moron". "Get off"....send

"I'm trying to"....send

hehehe   May 6th, 2010 3:12 pm ET

How about making a call while doing the "deed"? sounds cool.. hehhehe

scream   May 6th, 2010 3:12 pm ET

just like the television or the radio or your computer , there is an on/off button ..... but why is it so difficult to ignore a text or phone call if it shows up at an inconvenient time ??? hilarious that this is actually a topic of conversation ..... does the word duhhhhh .... men anything to anyone ???

Mark   May 6th, 2010 3:12 pm ET

Momma says cellphones are the DEVIL!!
Seriously, the worst invention of our time. The more they can do, the worse they are. Seems also the more they can do, the dumber the person using them.

hrs   May 6th, 2010 3:13 pm ET

If you want to be interupted go ahead. I am already busy. Nothing is ever better than being with my wife of 30 years. I dont want to talk to you anyway

Rori   May 6th, 2010 3:16 pm ET

Texting during eating or having a real time conversation with anyone is annoying and just plain RUDE! I absolutely hate it when I am trying to talk to somone and they are paying no attention to me as they are texting. People have no sense of manners or politeness anymore. PUT THE DAMN PHONE DOWN AND COME BACK INTO REALITY!!

Mom   May 6th, 2010 3:20 pm ET

Hey, it's Mom. Are you wearing a condom?

Samantha   May 6th, 2010 3:21 pm ET

oh god i'm going to......right.......NOW! phew, need a cigarette if i smoked.

Dave   May 6th, 2010 3:21 pm ET

Texting is fine with someone who hasn't had any in 5 years!

BRB   May 6th, 2010 3:21 pm ET

Electronic personal communication is the most annoying plague to infest the planet. People cell phoning in public places i.e. restaurants, movie lines, grocery stores, cars (may they hit a solid object please), sports events, concerts, ad infinitum. I am completely sick of the obsession and believe it is rude to force other people to listen to your blubbering crap. Shove your cell phone up your aXX.......

el oh el   May 6th, 2010 3:22 pm ET

i almost spit my water all over my monitor when reading this:

Exactly Meow....or if my mouth is full. k now i could be talking about eating dinner...haha

Dumbnfun   May 6th, 2010 3:25 pm ET

This is the dumbest and funniest thing I have heard all day. How about eating while doing the deed.....

Richard Rinkle   May 6th, 2010 3:27 pm ET

did you know pastrami on rye is the most sensual of the salted meats?

JMO   May 6th, 2010 3:27 pm ET

ROFL!

areyoukiddingme   May 6th, 2010 3:27 pm ET

Just when I thought humans had screwed up everything that it was possible to screw up....now we can't even breed correctly. Wow. The end must certainly be near.

Topper   May 6th, 2010 3:32 pm ET

Why don't the 25 year olds get a say? I see one column is for people under 25 and one is for people over 25....??? That's messed up!

Text me while your mating   May 6th, 2010 3:33 pm ET

I guess this would be good for couples who have A.D.D and need other things to distract them with.

Or maybe this would be good for people who are good at multi-tasking

TEXT:
"Hey were trying to have a kid can you text me later?"

ballz   May 6th, 2010 3:35 pm ET

I hope they put that scene into a new p0rn that comes out soon – should be interesting.
Texting while making the monster with 2 backs....idiots
Journalism is dead too apparently

bam   May 6th, 2010 3:36 pm ET

nothing wrong with txt'n some bets to your bookie while she is sucking it.

Sidewinder   May 6th, 2010 3:37 pm ET

So is it okay to pleasure myself with my cell phone while blogging?

Patrick   May 6th, 2010 3:39 pm ET

Because 25 year olds are stupid...LOL

Joshua   May 6th, 2010 3:40 pm ET

I can't believe this. I watch my generation and the younger one (I am 26) continue to live in a depersonalized world and it disgusts me. I am glad I grew up in the country with no real computer til the beginning of high school. I was always big into how they worked, but I am so disappointed in how the digital world has ruined our privacy. There is none left anymore. Ugh. I want to me a girl who is not texting all of the time. I want someone who can live in the moment.

ddzip   May 6th, 2010 3:40 pm ET

"OMG hes tryin to put his thingie in my hoohoo. What shld i do? is that right? shld i be sayin things like Oh Yes?" this is like so whack.

sobeit   May 6th, 2010 3:40 pm ET

Ok so I have gotten the ultimate phone because it is waterproof (Verizon Brigade) and now my friends expect me to respond to their texts while I am in the shower....the question is where do I hang it until I need it...this is the future

Diogenes   May 6th, 2010 3:41 pm ET

Are they texting each other or some one else???

Susan   May 6th, 2010 3:46 pm ET

If your txting while making love you aint doing it right

ddzip   May 6th, 2010 3:46 pm ET

This is the same generation who voted for Obama because he was like the younger one and all, yaknow. They don't know socialism from scrotums. All that technology and all they know how to research is who the Kardashians are dating today.

KidCanada   May 6th, 2010 3:46 pm ET

How can you hit the right buttons while doing it?
I MEAN THE KEYPAD!

Kevin   May 6th, 2010 3:47 pm ET

I just don't get how a girl can text with her face on the rug and her hands held firmly behind her back.

mimi   May 6th, 2010 3:47 pm ET

ha ~!~~~ let my man say " oh wait just a minute babe i have a text"

you will see him and his phone flying out the bedroom window ~~~
dinner and down time is another story... if people need texting that bad then i honestly believe there is a problem .~~~

Bill Carson   May 6th, 2010 3:48 pm ET

Ridiculous! Whether you are interrupted by your own cell phone is up to YOU, not the caller or text-sender. I turn mine off when I don't want to hear it, and have blocked all text messages.

Art   May 6th, 2010 3:48 pm ET

Lends one to believe that cell phones will take on a new shape or shapes, and, oh boy.... new ringtone vibration modes. :)

SBC   May 6th, 2010 3:49 pm ET

and why is this NEWS again???!?!? was their nothing else to report on?

Lisa   May 6th, 2010 3:49 pm ET

Was it mentioned in the pole wether or not if the person had children? If my child was not at home, and I was 'otherwisse occupied', I would definately at least check the text to see if was my child trying to reach me.

Otherwise, I would wait until I was no longer engaged in that activity to answer a text. Who ever it is, they can wait!!!!

Gnox   May 6th, 2010 3:56 pm ET

I believe people need to remain engaged with the person in front of them at the moment, it's part of respectful communication and attention to the other persons story, situation, expression, etc... To much focus is being placed on social media, mobile communication, etc. Sure, it's serves a great purpose, but lets not forget what is important...

Art   May 6th, 2010 3:56 pm ET

Don't squeeze so hard. send
Let me up, I need to breath... I can't breath... send

sameeker   May 6th, 2010 3:58 pm ET

Could be worse I suppose. They could be using those darn walki talki phones. I can't stand those things. I don't want to hear your conversation clear across the room. I can just hear a passionate encounter being played on one of them in a public restaraunt.

ras   May 6th, 2010 3:59 pm ET

Oh Children...

Denizen Kate   May 6th, 2010 4:00 pm ET

I think it's a generational thing. Those under 25 have grown up with cell phones and other wireless devices as commonplace as light bulbs and no more mysterious, while those of us who came of age in, say, the 60s (dating myself here) are just not as comfortable with technological proliferation. I turn my cell phone off when I'm driving, eating out with friends, and most definitely when I'm making love, but that's just this old bag of bones. Let the younger generation figure out what works for them; it's a different world today, and change is good.

ezmystic   May 6th, 2010 4:00 pm ET

I'm 64 and those dame cell phones S/B just for talking. Ya wanna send a text mesaage? Use f**king email!

radioactive   May 6th, 2010 4:02 pm ET

This article, and especially the posts, have made my day! Good stuff!

PedPink   May 6th, 2010 4:04 pm ET

A whole new market for the Palm cell phone on vibrate.

sameeker   May 6th, 2010 4:04 pm ET

OOPS wrong hole. Just like the other day when I wrecked the car while texting.

Pedobear   May 6th, 2010 4:05 pm ET

Did someone say children?

AGeek   May 6th, 2010 4:06 pm ET

My phone(s) & other technology are for MY convenience, not those trying to reach me. Silly people who are a slave to technology and objects get what they deserve. Live life and let technology be a convenience to you, not you a slave to it. If you're letting the silicon (not silicone!) steer, you're completely doing it (life) wrong.

svscnn   May 6th, 2010 4:07 pm ET

If you are literally "in the middle" of it, and your partner is willing/able to send or receive a text – you are doing something wrong.

May as well get your divorce papers in order now, BEFORE s/he cheats on you or leaves for a better lover.

It'll be less painful.

sameeker   May 6th, 2010 4:10 pm ET

Girl 1 – I have my phone on vibrate and in my panties. Text me often
Girl 2 – ok
Girl 1 – OMG OMG OMG OOOOMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGGG.
Girl 2 – R U OK
Girl 1 – Can you bring me a cig over?
Girl 2 – Only if I can use your phne next.

Barb   May 6th, 2010 4:11 pm ET

I know people who do it or have done it. As long is within the boundaries and limitations and don't offend anyone, is O.K. But the best and most appropriate is to ignore it, the majority of people do it and most helpful.

Fenarkleman   May 6th, 2010 4:12 pm ET

derp de derp! derp de derpety derpy derp, until one day, a derpaderpaderpaderp

svscnn   May 6th, 2010 4:13 pm ET

@Kevin: You rule. Best post on the thread.

Dean   May 6th, 2010 4:13 pm ET

The only time this would be appropriate is to let your partners Husband or Wife know how great they really are in the sack.

Barb   May 6th, 2010 4:13 pm ET

But I wanna ask...have you seen what some girls have texted? Oh boy, it is something! That's only if you know people who have done it or are getting in the mood.

Is O.K to feel ovulated, is the number one reason why women cheat.

Maria   May 6th, 2010 4:14 pm ET

If your partner is texting while you are doing him/her, then you aren't doing it right.

kerryberger   May 6th, 2010 4:14 pm ET

This is the most absurd thing I have ever read.

Tuffy   May 6th, 2010 4:14 pm ET

i suppose if your partner is THAT boring that you would want to text...but it's tacky and disrespectful.

Jess   May 6th, 2010 4:15 pm ET

I had never had this happen to me. Usually we both turn our cell phones off during the act and check them later. If he ever texted during the act, I would get up and leave...or kick him out.

Bobbym   May 6th, 2010 4:17 pm ET

Silence your phones! Please.

Daniel   May 6th, 2010 4:17 pm ET

My girlfriend's 21 year old son constantly takes and sends text messages during dinner. It's completely rude. Generally speaking, young people today have really poor manners. But we shouldn't completely blame them. The adults in their lives–parents, teachers, bosses, etc.–apparently don't insist on good manners.

Cindy   May 6th, 2010 4:17 pm ET

Receiving a text is only an intrusion if you choose to read it. That's the great thing about text messages - they'll still be there if you decide to wait and check them later. You have the choice! And the choice to delete them if you don't want to read them.

John   May 6th, 2010 4:19 pm ET

I text my partner when she isnt doing it right.

sameeker   May 6th, 2010 4:19 pm ET

What about the phone cam. Do they use it too?

Amunaka   May 6th, 2010 4:20 pm ET

Wow ...life is great.. .learned something today that I had never imagined or even thought about ..

PedPink   May 6th, 2010 4:20 pm ET

Actually, some smart phones can text your message by voice. There is a little microphone on the keyboard.

Sarah   May 6th, 2010 4:21 pm ET

PS I'm 27, didn't have a cell phone till I was 21, didn't start texting till I was 25. This generation is too tied to technology, and we need to go back to being real people instead of bots.

Pat   May 6th, 2010 4:22 pm ET

It's OK if you text each other.

CUTTY   May 6th, 2010 4:23 pm ET

Looks like our BIG GOVERNMENT and our fearless Socialist leader is trying to take away more rights.

James   May 6th, 2010 4:24 pm ET

Obviously your not doing it right.

Jamie   May 6th, 2010 4:25 pm ET

What's next, texting when you're dead? Why not talk face to face with someone. Is that too uncool?

johnnyhouse   May 6th, 2010 4:25 pm ET

I am speechless.

Lauren   May 6th, 2010 4:27 pm ET

No text enabled devices and the cell phone is only in the car for emergency use, haven't used it yet! The idea that you HAVE to be connected 24/7 is a sign the person has self confidence issues to me! I'm more of a "Don't call me, I'll call you" type person.

Peter   May 6th, 2010 4:28 pm ET

STOP WITH THIS. I see a bunch of you bashing under 25 year olds for this study. The difference was 5%. Under 25 was at 11% and over was at 6%. That's not that much. I think its assonine. Both numbers should be at 0% or you aren't doing it right like some have said. BUT PLEASE STOP BLASTING THE YOUNGER GENERATION BECAUSE THIS STUDY LOOKS BAD FOR EVERYBODY. As for the guy who said "this is the generation that voted for Obama because he was younger" can go away. We voted for him because his opponent was of the same ideology that had run the country into the ground for 8 years. Oh yeah, and he decided to run with a crazy person who likes too shoot wolves from helicopters but can't name a single magazine she reads.

Savonarola   May 6th, 2010 4:28 pm ET

If we just left technology in the hands of the nerds we wouldn't even need to worry about this problem.

huh?!   May 6th, 2010 4:30 pm ET

Clearly the problem is that too many people are doing the deed with folks who just aren't very cooperatively-proficient. Because if you can concentrate on ANYTHING other than keeping your eyes from crossing, your head from exploding, and your toes from curling, you're doing some wrong. It doesn't matter how old you are. If you're thinking about sending/reading a text during the "jam session", you should just stop, dismount, and find someone who "fits" you better.

AnneS   May 6th, 2010 4:31 pm ET

I was grinning when I read the article, thinking it was the funniest thing I had heard all week - then I read the comments.

I am practically in tears from laughing. Thanks for lightening my day!!

(Seriously, 10%? I guess we don't have to worry about that 10% passing on their genes because they aren't likely to get any)

Pat   May 6th, 2010 4:34 pm ET

OK, and it's OK if you are texting each other while laughing and loving. Not every second is "at the moment". And these phones can be set on "vibrate". Think of the possibilities.

rach   May 6th, 2010 4:37 pm ET

If you don't want to be interrupted you should probably get rid of your cell phone. A call or a text can come in whenever, wherever and for anything from “whatever” to an emergency. SRSLY. Don’t buy into an intrusive technology and then be mad when it gets too intrusive. Just go back to your rotary phone and eat your dinner in peace.

Dan Toma   May 6th, 2010 4:37 pm ET

Girl: {seeing male companion using his iPhone} "Are you texting again? You'd better have a good reason for playing with ...your phone"

Guy: "Just trying to download this new application, dear."
Girl: "Now??!!! You choose NOW to download an app? Well, what app is it, anyway?"
Guy: "It's called iViagra"
Girl: "Oh!"

PedPink   May 6th, 2010 4:38 pm ET

Natural selection in motion.

stubob   May 6th, 2010 4:40 pm ET

You mean to tell me you can't go 60 seconds without texting! Get a life.

Lucy   May 6th, 2010 4:41 pm ET

Well at 18 and 19 did any of really know how to do it "right" or at least for us ladies, did you really know what an "O" was??? So I'm sure the under 25 range is more like the 18-21 range...and again at that age was it all about being intimate or just getting yours? I figure most of them don't even know how to "please" a partner at that age to the extent that most of us posting do...immaturity and thinking that it should be like it is in the movies still apply at that age. It's just the new " one more mark on the bed post" way to tell who's doing who these days...in real time at that!

jose   May 6th, 2010 4:41 pm ET

I' m ok with it, but my wife gets mad when I rest my blackberry on her back.

Poll   May 6th, 2010 4:44 pm ET

This poll is just plain stupid and pointless. Of course there will be people that like something that most people don't, or dislike what other people like. I bet you ran a poll that asks how many people dislike breathing you would find some nut that hates it. How about: What's the percentage of the people that like piano falling on their head?
Do something that matters.

LebK   May 6th, 2010 4:45 pm ET

Hahahahaha, these comments made my day! :)

If the one I am making hanky panky with whips out a cell and starts to text she can go straight to my booty call list.

I'm 24 and got rid of my cell phone for 4 months and EVERYONE I know tried to crusify me as if I was the wierd one. I bowed down to the presure and got another one. But on the flip side I was able to rid myself of Facebook for good. DEATH to the anti-social movements!

steve   May 6th, 2010 4:45 pm ET

hurrrrrr durrrrrrrrrrrrrr

tribe   May 6th, 2010 4:45 pm ET

Study done with, or with out a partner???

Nita   May 6th, 2010 4:46 pm ET

If you phone is sticky...it's just icky. Face it, if you are guilty of texting or reading a text while engaged in what should be an all consuming activity, neither one of you are doing it right. Please stop trying because obviously the gene pool doesn't need more of you.

Matt   May 6th, 2010 4:46 pm ET

If we could just get Obama to do nothing but txt and sxt we'd all be so much better off......then he would keep his hands off our country....btw, I'm 30 and wouldnt' vote for him if my life depended on it....

Bill   May 6th, 2010 4:47 pm ET

As a parent of several kids, multiple teen-agers, I have some hard-fast rules. No phones at the dinner table. Don't text while I'm talking to you. Phones off at bed time, unless you are using it as an alarm clock. Any calls or texts after bed time will result in the loss of your phone. No texting during church.

Rick McDaniel   May 6th, 2010 4:47 pm ET

That's what I call really sad.

Cliff   May 6th, 2010 4:48 pm ET

mom..u were so rong....i am doin it rite now and...and....and....later momeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Queenzola   May 6th, 2010 4:49 pm ET

Is there an App for that?

Steve P.   May 6th, 2010 4:50 pm ET

New report: 1 in 10 people under 25 are either completely retarded or need to take a lesson or two about knockin' boots!!!

Ithucus   May 6th, 2010 4:52 pm ET

I see that texting while with friends and family is rude, and just stupid while driving or doing the deed. If I'm alone during a meal I can send a text or two, but while with others my attention is with the people I'm with. If it's that important that you need an answer right away call me. If I'm "occupied" you might be waiting for your answer.

Pete   May 6th, 2010 4:52 pm ET

No I know why older folks don't mind dying – because the world as they know it no longer exists. I guess at my ancient age of 52, I must be reaching that limit. I can't even believe this is a discussion. Cell phones and now texting are completely out of control. In the dating world, if I'm with a person for the first time and they are constantly texting, looking at the phone everytime it rings, etc, I politely cut the date short and that's the end of that person. We have become such a self-centered rude society. This would be funny if it weren't such a sad commentary society.

RickPitina   May 6th, 2010 4:55 pm ET

I'm all over this concept!!!!

rh   May 6th, 2010 4:56 pm ET

At least that means they're awake...

NJ Mom   May 6th, 2010 4:56 pm ET

What are we all up in arms about what other people are doing? Who cares? If you or your partner don't mind, then it's none of my business.

And for all of you who keep saying to hang up and talk to real people, you clearly don't understand the point of electronic communication. Most of the time if someone is texting, it's because a "real person" is replying to them. Example, I'm not fortunate enough to live in the same state or even the same region of the country as the rest of my family right now and it's my ONLY affordable way to keep in touch (text and Facebook for picutes). I now have a full chronological scrapbook of everything my family has done since we've moved away and my family LOVES being able to see it. (and yes, even my grandma has a facebook and twitter account now). At least our hobby of electronic communication keeps me busy enough not to care about what you're doing.

victor   May 6th, 2010 4:56 pm ET

The two-backed-monster texting?? LOL, that belongs on failblog.org.

Jessica   May 6th, 2010 4:57 pm ET

I think texting, cellphones, and, in fact, most other modern forms of communication are unwelcome distractions.

I really don't want to be connected 24/7. I couldn't care less what someone is ranting about on Twitter, or blogging about, or texting about, etc, etc ...

Really, get a life.

Carl   May 6th, 2010 4:58 pm ET

The phone is ok for:

a) pictures or movies if the couple is into that stuff or
b) using an app for positions to try if you are too cheap to get a Kama Sutra book....

Jon   May 6th, 2010 4:58 pm ET

What in the world are people smoking. This is the most ridiculous piece of verbal garbage I've ever read. It's also sad that so many of you morons would waste time and mental energy thinking and responding to this piece of crap.
The writer needs to find a new line of work.

kent   May 6th, 2010 5:00 pm ET

Jon said ironically as he read and answered this collumn.

chris   May 6th, 2010 5:01 pm ET

I get the feeling that those who said they didn't mind...were pulling one over on the surveyor. Because it's such a STUPID question.

james   May 6th, 2010 5:02 pm ET

CNN... a new low in journalism

John R   May 6th, 2010 5:03 pm ET

What a waste of good Internet space!

Norman   May 6th, 2010 5:04 pm ET

If someone is texting, or otherwise communicating when they are in company, then they basically don't give a hoot about you. Despite the protestations otherwise, their mind simply cannot be in two places at once.

Texting, I think, is pretty dumb. Got something to say? Pick up a phone. If it's not worth picking up a phone for, then it's probably not worth saying ... which means it's probably not worth texting about either.

Seriously, nobody cares what you're doing, where you're going, what you're looking at, who you're with, what you're eating, what you're wearing, etc, etc. .... really, nobody cares about it; get over yourself!

Jerry   May 6th, 2010 5:04 pm ET

One of the funniest message boards I have read in a LONG time. Love the Seinfeld references.

Janet   May 6th, 2010 5:05 pm ET

To Jon,

You must be a moron along with all the rest of us because you have "wasted mental energy thinking and responding to this piece of crap" too. MORON!!!

PedPink   May 6th, 2010 5:06 pm ET

er Jon.....

Dave 28   May 6th, 2010 5:07 pm ET

I'm ok with my wife texting at the same time as long as it is not to my Mother-in-law at the time!!

B76fa   May 6th, 2010 5:07 pm ET

Really???? Is this really newsworthy???? I would expect better things from CNN than this!!! absolute waste of space !!!!

Dave   May 6th, 2010 5:08 pm ET

Society is sick, and there must be some geeky girls who need me.

I don't text, tweet or anyother stupid forms of communication.

Why parents allow texting in the first place is beyond me. Worst form of communication besides emails.

They are raising droids.

NJ Mom   May 6th, 2010 5:11 pm ET

Ha ha Kent, I was thinking the same thing too.
So now Jon has really wasted his time by reading, analyzing and replying to an article he admittedly didn't care about to begin with. Who's the real smoking-moron now? LOL

johnie   May 6th, 2010 5:12 pm ET

This is so ridiculous. For one, you must not be enjoying it very much if you can text. 2. It just goes to show how impersonal we've become. I dont want to talk to you in any form if youre banging away. 3. What does this say about you as a person to have so little respect for your partner.. EVEN if you are just doin it to get your own jollies and dont care about theirs. 4. Its like a reality show gone TMI. 5. If you text while we're doin it.. we wont be doin it no more. Hit the road, forever.

D Man   May 6th, 2010 5:17 pm ET

Violet you have to read the comments below the actual article they are hilarious

meankitty   May 6th, 2010 5:17 pm ET

What kind of parent could this person be? Baby cries. Mom texts baby. "Whats wrong?" Baby continues crying. Mom replies, "WHAT THE (*^^IU%%% IS WRONG WITH YOU??!!" Baby screaming. Mom again. "Fine, if you wont talk to me then I'll just text my friend Jane. FIx your own bottle or diaper or whatever."

ok – imagine this . . . . two couples, separate houses, texting each other while they're getting down to business. i don't care what you say – that's hot!! it's like the new millennium version of swinging.

sparticus   May 6th, 2010 5:24 pm ET

ADD and technology dont mix. To much face book IM texting etc going on mostly from those who desprately need new attention or constant attention. Everybody knows me I'm cool syndrom.
In this situation I have to say I wouldnt be upset or anything but Id be trying to blow spunk as quick as possible and GTF outa there. If we were at my place Id prolly cry if she didnt leave right away. Dismount n call that hook a cab!

AGuest9   May 6th, 2010 5:38 pm ET

If you work a 24/7 oncall job, you HAVE to be able to stop, take a call and go into work. Which makes the idea that someone is going to txt (usually stupidity, anyway) DURING THE ACT that much more repulsive...

harry johnson   May 6th, 2010 5:39 pm ET

Stupid ass kids,f-ing morons is all they are.

Since IE is quicker booting up, I use IE when I know exactly where I want to go and need something quick. I use FF when I want to browse the internet for a while. FF is definitely faster after bootup. Haven't tried other browsers mostly because 2 is enough and the combo of IE and FF does the job for me.

Shistar   May 6th, 2010 6:22 pm ET

Soooo sry to ppl who think its ok but... when i am making love to my partner I am purely focused on him.. No phone no email, computer, TV magazines etc... Making love is supposed to be a special thing not a recreational activity. Thats what we have art, sports and yes even technology for...For Recreational activities! >..> Well my phone is off during those times so u can only really get a hold of me at work. LOL XD

Cindy   May 6th, 2010 6:23 pm ET

Texting while going to the bathroom....lol My husband takes his lap top into the bathroom with me...ewwww

bianca   May 6th, 2010 6:26 pm ET

Me and my husband (both 26 years old) had text messaging for a while. But after a couple of months we decided that the constant interruptions were just too annoying. Unfortunately my husband had to have his phone on 24/7 due to his job. So we decided to block text messaging. A lot of people say we are old fashioned because we don't like texting. But in my opinion it is a nuisance and a waste of money.
I also consider it rude when i am trying to communicate with a person, like go out for lunch with a friend, and they continuously text other people.

PedPink   May 6th, 2010 6:31 pm ET

Jokes aside, I highly doubt most people would actually like to have or allow their partner to text during all of the above polled activities. If someone actually did that during 'the act' then if it wasn't a one night stand, it certainly should be, unless the other was doing the same, then it doesn't matter to either of them.

G-Money   May 6th, 2010 6:31 pm ET

How is that even possible??????

Jbodem   May 6th, 2010 6:39 pm ET

Damn...I want to meet Samantha!

LOL   May 6th, 2010 6:41 pm ET

In terms of wierd behavior, this one rates about a 2 on the 10 scale. I suppose if faced with this, all responsibility for your partner's pleasure immediately goes away, so you can finish up and move along. Certainly this type of lover would be in the "temporary" category until you can find an upgrade who will pay attention and get into the activity.

LOL   May 6th, 2010 6:42 pm ET

This behavior places you at risk of premature calculation.

FH   May 6th, 2010 6:42 pm ET

if the phone is set on vibrate this may help enhance the experience

janet   May 6th, 2010 6:48 pm ET

yeah, you can use it as a form of BIRTH CONTROL.

StripedOne   May 6th, 2010 6:50 pm ET

So now instead of coitus interruptus we have textus interruptus. God forbid somebody have to set their cell down long enough to make love.

I can understand a door bell, but come on!

AustinP   May 6th, 2010 6:52 pm ET

My wife texts me when she's with her other guy (sometimes guys) and she sends pictures too. Takes the edge off of being on the road all the time!

lalaland   May 6th, 2010 6:52 pm ET

actually i would rather my partner talked on the phone instead of texting .............. NOT ... actually there was this one time ... her mom called while we were doing it and it was funny because she could not speak properly on the phone ... her voice would come and go lmao ... since we were looking at each other it was good for a laugh which made me just go harder so her voice became more distorted lol

Wayne from Belleville   May 6th, 2010 6:53 pm ET

I can't believe that a single person would consider that texting while making love is even in the realm of acceptable.

Then again, taking a look around, it is small wonder, the state of things.

To me, a woman is the loving nurturer, the man is the strong provider, and together they travel through life, hopefully graced with children to cherish and love.

Sodom and Gomorrah revisited.

J   May 6th, 2010 6:57 pm ET

This is very misleading. The question is phrased as "interrupted by an electronic message" or whether they would mind "getting a text or email while using the restroom." It doesnt say anything about actually responding to the text. I personally wouldnt care if my phone received a text during the middle of doing the dirty, I'd just simply ignore it until after and I think thats the mindset everyone had when answering the question.

Andrew   May 6th, 2010 6:58 pm ET

as long as you send pictures my way – go for it!

really   May 6th, 2010 7:07 pm ET

really...look at how the world is going today and all the issues we as americans struggle with on a day to day basis and cnn sees it fit to post a homepage headline as offensive as this...that is all i have to say

Student   May 6th, 2010 7:11 pm ET

The idea has merit. But, does your cell phone have to be on vibrate when swapping messages?

fractured   May 6th, 2010 7:12 pm ET

It's ok if you send MMS. "look!"

J,G   May 6th, 2010 7:15 pm ET

MarkE   May 6th, 2010 7:29 pm ET

If I'm bangin or taking a dump and my phone starts ringing, I'm furious. Texts and emails are superior because you don't have to respond to them right away.

Andrew   May 6th, 2010 7:29 pm ET

hmm.. does acceptance depend on who you are texting? What if the text is from the person you are with? If anybody has seen the clips of the Paris movie- that may be the only way to get her to respond to you.

Ali   May 6th, 2010 7:36 pm ET

There would be a castration right there on the bed. Hellllzzzzz to the no! ;-)

cliff   May 6th, 2010 7:37 pm ET

If you can text while doing "the deed"
then it's time you get rid of all your weed
I don't need to read about the "one-eyed man
Just toss your phone into the nearst trash can.

Jon   May 6th, 2010 7:44 pm ET

Oh yes!...Oh yes!...Wait...Hello?

Huff   May 6th, 2010 7:48 pm ET

Todays younger generation tends to email or text each other even when they are a few feet apart rather than actually talk. They use social networks to communicate rather than a phone. I use all of these but only when actually talking face to face or on the phone is not possible.

Sure theres Facebook, MySpace and others that are all good but I prefer the social network known as the Real World.

Daniel   May 6th, 2010 7:52 pm ET

If you “get interrupted” by any electronic communication while doing the deed, you are not doing it right. The validation about this issue is proof positive the world is going down the drain. Text messages and e-mails are the evil that will unravel the fabric of society, love and commitment. Just ask Tiger !

Dave Fisher   May 6th, 2010 7:56 pm ET

No one could text if you are doing it right!!!

MDwebpro   May 6th, 2010 8:04 pm ET

"Busy rit now... g/f abt 2 have massiv o-gasm, wd like 2 join her. call U l8tr."

ballspit   May 6th, 2010 8:06 pm ET

I feel it is perfectly ok. Look..your hands are usually free, right, so if the moment moves you...why not send a quick text? No harm done...after all..if your the guy...your just looking to get your rocks off, finish then hit the road to meet your buds and just hope you didnt miss much of the game. You ladies need to lighten up...just take it...like it and let the texting begin...chow

bigguy   May 6th, 2010 8:07 pm ET

What if you text and love with the same hand?

ballspit   May 6th, 2010 8:11 pm ET

Well...then you must be a tripelegic...?

Solo77   May 6th, 2010 8:15 pm ET

big bite   May 6th, 2010 8:15 pm ET

If a guy was just lying back (talking/texting/watching tv) while I'm doing my work and I noticed, I'd go ahead and bite all the way down. I haven't had to do that yet.

Coaster   May 6th, 2010 8:16 pm ET

What a pointless debate. A cell phone is nothing more than a tool. How you use it is up to you. For everyone claiming that it is the downfall of something, or the end of the something or other...seriously. It's a TOOL. If you can't handle the ax without cutting yourself....

It isn't the text messages that are intruding, it's the user that isn't entertained. If they weren't getting that extra entertainment from their cell phone, then they would be getting it somewhere else, maybe with someone else.

No, texting isn't only for teen girls, get with the program. It's more used than the telephone for short coversations and messages, both personal and work related.

None   May 6th, 2010 8:16 pm ET

Nothing wrong if she is facing the other way and you can reach the phone on the nightstand!

ballspit   May 6th, 2010 8:18 pm ET

Big Bite....don't let it bother you...Take a deep breath then let it out...there you go, there you go..............

Elbucho   May 6th, 2010 8:21 pm ET

Here is why charts and other analytics are patently useless : they are open for interpretation. The chart and report says "can you be interrupted for an electronic message at any time?", but the report here spins this to mean "is it okay". Linguistically, "can you be" and "is it permissible to you" are as different and night and day, but here they've been combined to mean the same thing.

Bogus article, move on.

derek   May 6th, 2010 8:25 pm ET

I once answered the phone while making love..... and was greeted by my Mom's voice! Never again.... I repeat never again!

Coaster   May 6th, 2010 8:25 pm ET

There are some messages that you WANT to intrude no matter what....

"Mommy (or Daddy) I was hit by a car, they're taking me to the hospital. Can you be there soon?"

"mommy (or daddy) please come get me NOW, Little Johnny can't keep his hands to himself, I'm walking along Main Street....pls hurry!"

"I have a flat tire, I'm downtown somewhere, can you call the garage – I don't have the number"

"Honey, they moved my deployment up to NOW, I won't be home for dinner...or the next year"

"Mom, Dad, Mom and Dad in Law, Brother, Cousin and Family: the babys coming NOW..more info later!"

"dad – mom said not to tell you, but she really liked that earrings set you showed her, she just thinks you will think it is too expensive. Don't tell her I said so!"

"dear, little Jenny brought home a kitten (!) can you stop and get kitty litter on the way home from work? and a SCRATCHING POST!"

and so on.

derek   May 6th, 2010 8:27 pm ET

I was good until these two.

Everyone had to have bell bottoms in the 80's, disco music and a windsurfer in the 90's, cell phones in the 00's... it comes and it goes. I think the next big gadget will be fast and cheap traveling. (Like going to the Caribbeans in 45 minutes from Canada.)

Wow, if a girl ever stopped, mid-coitus, to answer a text message, that would be our last intimate encounter. That's ridiculous that 10% of the under 25ers think this is acceptable

If she can still text with her wrists handcuffed to her ankles, then I just give up.

You guys are idiots, you didnt even read my prior post well enough to realize you got completely punked by this article. America is getting less literate by the minute.

wtvwebcome   May 6th, 2010 10:39 pm ET

I'm sorry...are people really using children as an excuse to check the cell phone during the moment? c'mon...that's what's wrong with the world today...first of all...what did your parents do when you didn't have a cell phone? second, check it after, them needing to be picked up at the mall can wait until after. are your kids in that much trouble all the time?

Elbucho   May 6th, 2010 11:04 pm ET

I've got a clicker and I'm counting the idiots.

shamgar50   May 7th, 2010 12:51 am ET

I was watching this mother and her brat, in a restaurant the other day. The mother was speaking to her daughter, and the kidt was texting the entire time. She would occasionally look up, and mumble something, but more often than not, the mother had to repeat what she was saying, in response to the kids blank stare.

That phone would have been history after about the second, or third time, if that had been my child.

Oodoodanoo   May 7th, 2010 1:45 am ET

The Pope says it's OK if you're texting the one you're doing it with. Or Jesus.

Kids under 25 don't know what they're doing in bed anyway.....getting a text is a great excuse to shift the focus away from their poor performance and unsatisfied partner.

iLoveApple App   May 7th, 2010 9:20 am ET

I dated a person that would actually send and read text messages while we were making love. I thought it was ridiculous. She would be on all fours while I was physically inside her and she'd be texting away the whole time. It made me feel inadequate and unable to please her. How does one text to their girlfriends while you're making love? Needless to say we broke up but I hear she's still texting in bed.

ProProv   May 7th, 2010 9:21 am ET

Or, could it just be the fact that the 25+ age group didn't have all this text messaging nonsense when we were younger? At least I didn't, and I'm 23. My home is a "no phone zone" after a certain time at night, and I find it downright rude when a friend/spouse/etc. texts someone while they're having a conversation with me, or dinner, etc.

Jeff   May 7th, 2010 10:15 am ET

Jenickki   May 7th, 2010 12:07 pm ET

You've got to be kidding me. Last time I checked, I was to busy in the act to be thinking about much of anything else. I think if sending a text is what you are thinking about, then perhaps you should not be in the act in the first place.

Oh, Demolition Man...they put electrodes on their heads and touched finger tips. I don't recall anything with cell phones.

About the whole self pleasure thing and the cell phone...sounds like a new fetish to me.

Jake Rockwel   May 7th, 2010 12:07 pm ET

A guy texting on the phone during the moment can be punished in a way that he will never forget. The second he is done, give him a slap on the ass and say, "You were great, baby". Then jump out of bed, step onto the back porch, and light up a cigarette.

Colin   May 7th, 2010 2:10 pm ET

I work at a cell phone store.. this is the EXACT reason I refuse to touch someones cell phone when they just hand it to me and say "its not working" I ask them to set it down on my counter and explain what happened... Peoples phones go exactly where their hands go sometimes and its not a pretty story when they say "oh well i dropped it in the toilet", or the infamous "you dont want to know what happened".
Purell is a must!

This whole post is based on a terrible survey and margin of error. Only 1,000 people? There are over 300 MILLION people in the US. And, a 4% margin of error means that the number of people could be anywhere with an 8 point percentage range.

Come on. How can you even call this a scitech blog if you refuse to get a more technically sound survey?

The majority of these young dim bulbs voted for Obama. So what do you expect??? Of course they wouldn't mind being interrupted by dumb technology.

Anon   May 21st, 2010 10:17 pm ET

You guys are idiots...Interrupted by a text doesn't mean they stopped to answer their phone, it simply means that someone texted them while they were doing the deed. I don't think anyone actually replies to text messages while doing the deed.

And as far as text messaging goes, people, look all around you. Chances are, if you're over 35, your children know more than you do about...Well, pretty much everything you do.

Electronics are clearly replacing the physical, allowing for more freedom in actions, movements, etc. If you own a pc, it's your fault. If you've bought a phone, it's your fault. iPod? Gaming console? Your fault. Hell, even if you own a dvd player, it's your fault. You paid for them to continue the development. "Some of our buyers like to travel... so how about we make one that can sit in their lap so they can watch movies in public!"

Instead of whining about it...Do something about it...

Gerry   November 1st, 2010 1:12 pm ET

texting during sex is only acceptable if it's a typical several-hour-marathon.. Say you're coming up for air, taking a breather between sessions, check twitter, send a quick text, then go off to round 7 or wherever you left off.

lucy snutgh   November 1st, 2010 9:26 pm ET

I am just plain tired of cell phones and texts. My 10 yr old grand daughter and my daughter-in-law texted ten times a day when my daughter-in-law went away fir the weekend – it doesn't seem to have occurred to her that a 10 year old needs to learn a little independence. Every time mommy got through, the little girl got all teary-eyed, she couldn't be away from her cell phone for more than a few minutes, had it under the dinner table to check it. This is egotism on Mommy's part who still needs to be the center of the child's attention and terrifically destructive – as all helicopter parents are – to the kids development. I am sick of my acquaintances who interrupt lunch or just conversation to talk to their adult kids, instead of ignoring the phone or saying "I'll call you back later". I am choosing different friends when this happens, it is just way to self-centered and rude.

what@dbb   November 2nd, 2010 2:28 am ET

the world truly is getting dumber. The less educated propagate at a higher rate than the rest. it is an unfortunate correlation deviating significantly from the Darwinian/God-given evolutionary tale.

dbf   November 2nd, 2010 5:57 pm ET

I can see answering one, Maybe two, txt messages at a meal, but any more than that, I would rather not eat with you. I had supper with a friend who 3/4 times when I was talking would get a message, read it, and say something out loud or laugh about it. HELLO, I'm trying to talk here!!

Randy D in Providence NC   November 2nd, 2010 7:52 pm ET

These young girls (but over 18!) need to find a 40 year old such as I to make love to. Obviously they are picking very poor lovers. Trust me girls, if you are with me, you won't even remember you have a cell phone!

Ever had an orgasm? I don't mean a vibrating ring, lmao.

Bobo   November 3rd, 2010 3:06 pm ET

Text during sex ?? Never . . . my opinion is only an inconsiderate ass would do such a thing.
On the toilet texting – or taking a call – never. Disgusting, repulsive, childish, & arrogant.
Texting or taking a call when eating out ?? The only time I'd ever do that if if I'm waiting on an additional companion who maybe is running late & I see their name pop up on my phone. Otherwise looking at your phone is the height of rudeness to your dinner companion.
BTW, I'm a mature, 50 something adult, & yes I know ther are a lot of 30 something children who think all of the above is OK.

Bobo   November 3rd, 2010 3:13 pm ET

Uhh . . . note to "iLoveApple App" . . . you say your girlfriend would be texting her girlfriends while you were inside her ??
Let's hope you're making a joke, because if not then you must be all of 4 inches long which would explain her wanting to do something constructive while you fiddled around leaving her unsatisfied.

Robin Burns   November 8th, 2010 1:57 pm ET

So are we that detached from the real world now that this question can be asked at all? Yikes-give me back my life! Even better, get real people. We are not robots.

Tif S   June 9th, 2011 12:25 pm ET

Text during sex-not polite of course, rude, inconsiderate but
sometimes...very rarely... there are emergencies. it is just the person
answering it. are you going to lean over and look at your phone? it just
depends on the person.

Texting on toliet- Who cares? It's not like they know i am peeing. Actually
talking on the phone while on the toliet. well duh, that is a bit rude.

Texting during a meal-Once again who cares? IF you are at home or
with friends, as long as your nose isn't buried in the screen, who cares?
At the parents house or somewhere fancy, probably not the best
thing to do.

I realize a lot of you on here are older, but we younger generations
have a different view and are more tolerance of certain things.
Just because a few percent of the population like to make asses
out of themselves, does not mean that the rest of us are as
inconsiderate.

Krystle   June 15th, 2011 4:52 pm ET

I think this electronic rubbish has become ridiculous. Why can't people just put their mobile devices down and actually have a conversation with someone? Or even have sex without having to post every position and anything else they maybe doing in bed. This has become a voyeuristic sick society. I feel very bad for the children of the future. People buying these devices are just feeding into the greedy, perverted corporations who look to allow this nonsense to be posted.
