Gold-and-diamond iPad could be yours for $190,000

Posted: 12:32 PM ET

Got an extra $190,000?

Then you could have an Apple product that you REALLY don't want to leave behind at a California beer hall.

Stuart Hughes, a British company that bills itself as a purveyor of "ultimate luxury," is offering a 22-carat gold iPad encrusted with more than 25 carats of flawless diamonds (including a diamond Apple logo).

The company has made 10 copies of their Gold iPad Supreme.

"This most luxurious iPad's appearance is outstanding even down to the precise polishing to reveal its most beautiful harmonious appearance," the company's website says in a curiously worded sales pitch.

The tablet computer costs 129,995 British pounds - roughly $190,000, depending on the exchange rate at the moment. No word on whether that price include personal hand delivery by Steve Jobs.

And, for the record, Stuart Hughes shelled out the extra $300 or so to get the top-of-the-line 3G, 64GB version. You know ... ultimate luxury and all.

The version is 64 GB not KB. That would be less than this page. That would be counter-productive.

Andy   May 14th, 2010 12:59 pm ET

seriously who writes these things? KB?? haha...

Jeff   May 14th, 2010 12:59 pm ET

Sure, it might look nice, but with AT&T's service you're going to wish you never bought it.

Bob   May 14th, 2010 1:03 pm ET

Can I pre-order 10 of those?

Someone   May 14th, 2010 1:03 pm ET

Yeah, well, it's another iPad reporter. It's not like he has any brains or sense to do real jobs about real news, so he gets this scrub work.

Good job, by the way, this is DEFINITELY news worthy.

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:04 pm ET

Its official: CNN is Apples little B!-CH!

MimoMe   May 14th, 2010 1:05 pm ET

Mariah Carey got a diamond and crystals encrusted one as a gift worth $25,000 from Elizabeth Arden- her perfume manufacturer. It has a pink trademark butterfly and "M".

misty   May 14th, 2010 1:05 pm ET

who would buy something like this?? now wonder ppl cant pay off their credit cards!!!

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:07 pm ET

@ misty
Well, if Steve Jobs would hold it up and say that this new "whamadine" iPad kicks the old one to the curb, you can bet all the Apple Sheep would flock to the nearest store, seel their first born and their soul, for a chance to have one.

ps   May 14th, 2010 1:07 pm ET

im pretty sure its gb not kb... lol looks like andy and john caught that too. 64 kilobytes wouldnt be worth 10 cents.

Adi   May 14th, 2010 1:08 pm ET

Why to buy Gold plated...I think they have not seen youtube destructive ipad videos....

Nick D.C.   May 14th, 2010 1:08 pm ET

hahahahah. OK.

Ryan   May 14th, 2010 1:09 pm ET

@ Jeff yea....or when they come out with something new and this looks like a gold plated nintendo compared to a playstation 3

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:09 pm ET

I would love to see the person who buys this try and use it on the subway. *snark snark*

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:10 pm ET

I wonder how much cash i could get for this by turning it into one of those gold pawn shops.

Tommy   May 14th, 2010 1:10 pm ET

Does that come with the AppleCare extended service plan or is that an extra charge?

Sounds like it's worth it , though. All that gold should be an aid in WiFi and 3G reception, shouldn't it?

Josh   May 14th, 2010 1:10 pm ET

John your just stupid. They know what they put and its not nice to criticize them for a key error you loser.

Josh   May 14th, 2010 1:11 pm ET

All of you are stupid and dumb and stuff so yeah.

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:11 pm ET

@ Tommy:
Sorry, the article forgot to mention that this new gold model only works via dial-up.

Nicholas   May 14th, 2010 1:12 pm ET

$190,000 can probably save a few thousand lives, either from hunger or vaccinations ... I can't even imagine the stupidity required to permit this degree of vanity!

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:13 pm ET

@ Nicholas:
I hope for that price it also comes with a gold iPad bling chain.

Kyle H   May 14th, 2010 1:14 pm ET

This article doesn't say anything about financing. Do they offer financing?

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:14 pm ET

The bad news is that whoever buys this product should be aware that gold is one of the softest precious metals out there. It will dent easily.

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:16 pm ET

Its a fake!!! Look at the picture that is provided in the article. The iPad on the left has 3 ISB ports in it.

SteveM   May 14th, 2010 1:17 pm ET

For $190,000 you could hire 100 illegal aliens for a year.

notanewb   May 14th, 2010 1:17 pm ET

KB!? HAHAHAHHAHA

come on CNN!, and don't say its a typo because K is no where near the G on the keyboard. someone clearly doesn't know what they're talking about.

Sniffit   May 14th, 2010 1:19 pm ET

I'd buy a bronzed turd before I'd buy this steaming hunk of gold-plated crap. Stop advertising for Apple, CNN.

SteveM   May 14th, 2010 1:20 pm ET

Sniffit – What a coincidence! I happen to have a bronzed turd for sale! Cheap! You can sniff it.

douggross   May 14th, 2010 1:22 pm ET

Good catch, John. Fixed.

Sniffit   May 14th, 2010 1:22 pm ET

Always pads – $5.

Gold plate iPad – $190,000.

Free advertising via commercials parading around as journalism – Priceless.

slorgg   May 14th, 2010 1:23 pm ET

Golden toilet seat anyone? The "KB" is hilarious. Dead weight reporting. Can I have your job since you can't do it clearly?

crApple....

Sniffit   May 14th, 2010 1:23 pm ET

SteveM – Cool...I love the smell of bronze (??)

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:25 pm ET

I wonder what kind of commission CNN writers get paid for each article they post involving crApple.

Stupid   May 14th, 2010 1:26 pm ET

"John your just stupid. They know what they put and its not nice to criticize them for a key error you loser."

"All of you are stupid and dumb and stuff so yeah."

Josh: maybe you should check "your" own usage prior to submitting a comment. Especially when "you're" giving someone the business.

Paul Brians "Common Errors in English Usage" should be on "your" reading list.

Thanks and have a good day and have a nice weekend and take care so yeah.

Robert   May 14th, 2010 1:26 pm ET

Is there a day that goes by without CNN doing a promo "news" article for Apple?

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:28 pm ET

Who let the grammar police in the lobby again?

let's be real   May 14th, 2010 1:32 pm ET

SteveM, 100? Sign me up!

Lola Lalita   May 14th, 2010 1:33 pm ET

wow.. they really have nothing else to come up with. Whats next?

Joe C   May 14th, 2010 1:37 pm ET

Link is dead....

Demara   May 14th, 2010 1:38 pm ET

Another pointless item of luxury. Crap that we don't need.

Ben   May 14th, 2010 1:42 pm ET

To the person who said that it has 3 USB ports. Seriously? =/ Those are not USB ports.

JP   May 14th, 2010 1:42 pm ET

why do these idiots think this has anything to do with apple?? it doesn't? this is ANOTHER COMPANY taking an apple product, doing some stuff to it (gold plating and embedding 25carats of diamonds in it) and reselling it from their website only

the stupidity of some of the people that read and comment on these articles is astounding, it really really is

and anyone who says "crApple" has obviously never picked up an apple computer with OSX or better installed on it

Mr. Awesome   May 14th, 2010 1:42 pm ET

The real question is..... WILL IT BLEND?!

Farrukh Jawed   May 14th, 2010 1:43 pm ET

LOL the company's website down! So much traffic .. i guess

Franko   May 14th, 2010 1:43 pm ET

As an employee of Goldman Sacs, with iGold, flaunt you poverty.
With Tarps and bailouts, you will be able to buy an iPlatinum version.

Of course, iDiamond coatings are also necessary.

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:43 pm ET

@ Ben:
Its true. Its a fake. That shiny apple logo on the left of the picture is just a pasty.

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:45 pm ET

@ Mr. Awesome ROFL!!!!! I wanna know!

Trac   May 14th, 2010 1:46 pm ET

Things like this make me sick sick sick! The fact that people out there not only come up with this kind of overly "lavish" item – people actually purchase this stuff!!! Nearly $200,00.....come on!!!!! Do you realize how many regular cel phones can be purchased for that kind of money t hat can be used for our troops fighting for our freedom or for women from abused homes living in shelters??? Does ANYONE other than me ever think about those kinds of things – the wasteful spending that goes on all the while programs for our VETERANS are being cut back???? I'm not even a VET – just an average -joe-hard-workign-middle-class-female that HATES crap like this!!!! SICK OF IT!!!

phatmackn02   May 14th, 2010 1:46 pm ET

This comes with a 90 day manufacturer warranty right? Good, I'm pretty sure it shipped without that gold shell on it, send another?
:)

The Game   May 14th, 2010 1:47 pm ET

Oh CNN you swallow apples balls so hard!

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:47 pm ET

@ Trac:
Read the article. Its a British company...not an American company.

The Fury   May 14th, 2010 1:49 pm ET

Here's what's retarded. The iPad is an obsolete piece of hardware. If you could spend $190,000 on a computer, you'd get one that has a TRILLION times more functionality then this piece of crap.

phatmackn02   May 14th, 2010 1:49 pm ET

@Trac... do you have a computer in your kitchen...? And the proper term would be average -joette-hard-workiNG-middle-class-blahblahblah.

Have a great day.

Trac   May 14th, 2010 1:50 pm ET

Here we go again:
You're right – it is a British company – but that was not my point – my point was just about how much wasteful spening there is....ALL OVER THE WORLD. Thanks for reading my comment though.

hah   May 14th, 2010 1:50 pm ET

Stuart Hughes needs to take some of that money and get his webserver back online!!

John in AZ   May 14th, 2010 1:50 pm ET

Who would buy disposable technology covered in gold and diamonds? In 2 or 3 years this will be like having a diamond turntable, or a gold pager. It is sooooo dumb!

The Fury   May 14th, 2010 1:51 pm ET

@Trac

ROFL. Being a veteran, I can assure you $190,000 worth of cell phones in combat isn't very helpful.

I appreciate your passion, but boy did you make me laugh.

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 1:52 pm ET

@ John in AZ:
Its one highly expensive paper weight.

Trac   May 14th, 2010 1:52 pm ET

phatmackn02:
Nope I have an old laptop that I just got spiffed up so that I don't have to spend the $$ on a new one. And yeah – I wondered about the JoeTTE grammer. You have a good day too!

HAHA   May 14th, 2010 1:53 pm ET

one word. retarded.

rich   May 14th, 2010 1:53 pm ET

i rather use the money to buy a house >_<

Val   May 14th, 2010 1:55 pm ET

How many people are dying with hunger everyday.. Is this really needed? Do some better jobs guys

Tj   May 14th, 2010 1:55 pm ET

Too funny John – Who pays these people

Trac   May 14th, 2010 1:55 pm ET

The Fury:
I know phones can't help in combat but it sure would help some of them keep in touch with family from time to time. Thank you for your service!

John in AZ   May 14th, 2010 1:56 pm ET

I think we all agree this is dumb.

Now, if it were covered in Platinum, that'd be a totally different thing! :)

Stephen   May 14th, 2010 1:59 pm ET

how about a personal hand job by steve jobs

Greg   May 14th, 2010 2:01 pm ET

Here we go again May 14th, 2010 1:16 pm ET

Its a fake!!! Look at the picture that is provided in the article. The iPad on the left has 3 ISB ports in it.

Moron that is the speaker. It is on the iPad but apparently you are too dumb to know that.

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 2:03 pm ET

Your a stupid-head Greg :) Speaker wires are round, USB ports are thin and squared off. Like the one in the picture.

Rick McDaniel   May 14th, 2010 2:05 pm ET

That's a hefty price tag for something that will be obsolete in 90 days.

Brickell Princess   May 14th, 2010 2:07 pm ET

You couldn't pay me $190,000 to carry an iPAD! Do you know how embarrassing it is to be seen in public with an Apple product?

Apple = Apparently pretentious people like electronics

Greg   May 14th, 2010 2:07 pm ET

Here we go again

Retard go look at the apple website and shut the hell up. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Larry Levy   May 14th, 2010 2:08 pm ET

Thank God for the suckers.

Joe   May 14th, 2010 2:11 pm ET

Mr Awesome is right, the real question is.....

WILL IT BLEND!?!?!?!~?! =3

Joe   May 14th, 2010 2:14 pm ET

@ herewegoagain,
the guy said those 3 ports are THE SPEAKER, not speaker PORTS as you have suggested. this goes to show that all Apple related things cause loss of intelligence.

HoneyB   May 14th, 2010 2:16 pm ET

Cute…but does all this gold plating and diamond blinging void the warranty? If I know Apple, and I do know Apple (*wink*), they will not be offering a repair if needed on this thing. Then it will become a $190,000 paper weight!

Ruben   May 14th, 2010 2:21 pm ET

it says GB, can u see

Scott   May 14th, 2010 2:24 pm ET

Dumb, dumb, dumb. Gold will fall to $800/oz within the next 12 months. Wait a little while and save yourself $50K-$70K

mike   May 14th, 2010 2:27 pm ET

fighting on the internet is like winning the special olympics... so yeah, greg, you're retarded, too. And apparently I am, as well. BUT – so is this item, as well as everything else "Apple." I didn't need any more reasons to hate them, but they just keep giving them to me!

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 2:28 pm ET

USB Ports :P

Jaxon13   May 14th, 2010 2:30 pm ET

How much does this thing WEIGH now? "Gold iPad owner sues; Claims tendonitis!" Ha!

ryan   May 14th, 2010 2:31 pm ET

10,000 worth of wholesale diamonds, 1-2 grams of gold + labor, you could get any jeweler to make this for you for around $30,000 tops.

Mark   May 14th, 2010 2:32 pm ET

2 words: Lay away :)

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 2:35 pm ET

So, if the new gold plated iPad is now on the market, does that mean all the others are heading to the clearance bin?

Sree   May 14th, 2010 2:35 pm ET

The KB was probably edited later by CNN, ruben.

Anywz, figured out the source of recession. Thanks for enlightenment.

MimoMe   May 14th, 2010 2:36 pm ET

I dont think any luxury product (Bentley $1M cell phone, Swarovski $720K toilet, etc...) are meant for ordinary folks! Most is promotional and are given to the elite... Let's be fo real, the Gold iPad is no exception.

Jaxon13   May 14th, 2010 2:38 pm ET

Frodo must get this to Mount Doom–FAST!!!

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 2:41 pm ET

@ Ruben:

Perhaps you should read the other comments. The writer of the article posted at Post #27 at 1:17pm that he corrected the typo of KB to the proper GB.

Givmeabrek   May 14th, 2010 2:43 pm ET

But will it blend!!!! :)

MrBo   May 14th, 2010 2:44 pm ET

I bet Apple's warranty is void, since this is modded.

Epic FAIL

WL   May 14th, 2010 2:49 pm ET

Won't the goldinterfere with the 3G reception? Isn't that the whole reason the newly discovered iPhone is made with a ceramic back – to increase reception?

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 2:51 pm ET

@ WL:
I don't think new owners will care. They just want to tote the thing around to look impressive. Nothing beats having an oversized gold iPhone sticking out of your back pocket while you are strutting down the street.

Shawn   May 14th, 2010 2:52 pm ET

190k and it doesn't even support flash.

Jaxon13   May 14th, 2010 2:58 pm ET

Wouldn't a Kevlar encased one make more sense?

Ananth   May 14th, 2010 3:07 pm ET

Only Arab Sheiks can afford this, eh?

Yogi   May 14th, 2010 3:09 pm ET

That's a lot of money. It's almost what the Queen spends in one day...

Leprakawn   May 14th, 2010 3:10 pm ET

Hey, Josh... stupid is as stupid does, 'eh?

"John your just stupid."

I hope you know that "your" – as in "you are" – requires an apostrophe-r-e; thus, "you're."

Pardon me for asking, but what was that you were saying about Josh and everyone else here again?

balagyi   May 14th, 2010 3:10 pm ET

I'll buy a house rather than this junk.

Bob   May 14th, 2010 3:11 pm ET

to the guy who said this is a fake... due to the three usb connections on the left picture.... those are actually the speakers. Just thought I'd point that out. And I just bought 2 and they are not fake.

Leprakawn   May 14th, 2010 3:17 pm ET

Val:

Did you see the CNN article a year or so ago about one woman's virginity costing something like 3.2 million dollars? (I have it listed on my "Humanity" page, http : // reaganator . com.)

Your sentiments were my exact thoughts on that note.

Earl   May 14th, 2010 3:18 pm ET

Ever wonder how rich people go broke?

Flydominican   May 14th, 2010 3:21 pm ET

Wow! all that and still no Flash!

Higgins   May 14th, 2010 3:23 pm ET

this may be the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen...Stuart Hughes is smart though...some moron WILL buy it thinking it will make them look cool. This moron will have no personality and most likely be unattractive and have low self-esteem.

Leprakawn   May 14th, 2010 3:25 pm ET

Criminy...

Correction to above: Pardon me for asking, but what was that you were saying about *John* and everyone else here again?

Jaxon13   May 14th, 2010 3:26 pm ET

I bought a couple just to whack with my polo mallet and kick into my swimming pool.....

Garmac   May 14th, 2010 3:27 pm ET

What do you do when and if it breaks down? Go to the apple store??? Hahahaha

Mr.Singh   May 14th, 2010 3:29 pm ET

I'll paint one gold and put in rein-stones and it will come out better than this one.

JorgeinMiami   May 14th, 2010 3:33 pm ET

To all of the people who complain about the newsworthiness of reports.
If you don't like them, don't read them; And definitely don't post comments. The web is vast, and there is room for all. Go read the BBC if your tolerance for newsworthiness is so acute.

Jaxon13   May 14th, 2010 3:38 pm ET

What else could they coat the iPad with? I'll start:

KFC Breading.

Play-Doh.

Moss.

jimmy   May 14th, 2010 3:49 pm ET

this site has such a h@rd0n for apple its funny

doofus   May 14th, 2010 3:55 pm ET

what a waste of gold. it makes me wanna cry...

John   May 14th, 2010 3:55 pm ET

So did Apple buy CNN or something? Seems like CNN can't go 72 hours without a story about Apple.

nino   May 14th, 2010 4:01 pm ET

i bet P. Diddy just bought one.

boz   May 14th, 2010 4:02 pm ET

Being a video gamer and an avid forum reader anyone ever think that cnn get a kick out of just posting stuff like this just to troll bored people? thats what id do. and the wierd typos that no normal person would make just makes the troll that much better.

tigerlilie   May 14th, 2010 4:06 pm ET

who ever buys this please pay for my college education?

Josh   May 14th, 2010 4:06 pm ET

Who said we leave in bad economy?

I wondering if it's jailbroken

Rawr   May 14th, 2010 4:07 pm ET

Ha ha, rich adults thease days. What will they think of next? A golden tampon aplicator?

Jaxon13   May 14th, 2010 4:08 pm ET

How about for those non-affluent baby-boomers out there, they cover one in gold shag carpeting?

jimmy   May 14th, 2010 4:09 pm ET

boz

you spelled weird wrong buddy.

back to your video games.

Rachael   May 14th, 2010 4:12 pm ET

as if theres not enough issues going on, we waste gold on this?
honestly there product is good enough as is...well could be better *ahem att gross *ahem*

at any way what a waste of an article, i thought maybe itd be donated to some organization or something...ah well.

boz   May 14th, 2010 4:15 pm ET

@ jimmy
i sorry
ill go play my games now =[

Adam   May 14th, 2010 4:16 pm ET

Buy yourself an IPAD/IPOD/ITouch and send it to me.. I can plate your case at one of the best plating shops in the US for ~$5000 – minus the Diamonds of course.. but seriously why pay 190k for the same thing I could do for 5k? I don't get it.

Alena   May 14th, 2010 4:17 pm ET

Now I can add this to my collection of a gold-plated lambirgini and my solid gold bed. Thanks

graves   May 14th, 2010 4:18 pm ET

Wow, some of you guys are uber ignorant, childish and critical. Sheesh. lol *Breeeeaaaathheee*

Anonymous   May 14th, 2010 4:18 pm ET

How much extra I need to pay for upgrades? Or add atleast a cam to this old tech??

honda14si   May 14th, 2010 4:20 pm ET

I can beleive there is so many Apple Haters, Damn, really... But apple probably sees it in a postive way;Ofcourse, The more Haters, the better the company is probably doing, And I can assure you, Those haters out there are probably just people that hate everything in there paths even when its something great like the ipad, just suck it up and go to an apple store and try it out for yourself. please, please do before you open up your negative mouths

John   May 14th, 2010 4:21 pm ET

CNN, give it a rest on the iPad.

I know a lot of tech savvy people who run out and buy new gadgets all the time (one has every generation of iPhone) and they're all completely uninterested in the iPad.

This hype is completely self-created. You are not a trendsetter. You're not even aware of where the trends are and every iPad article hammers this home.

honda14si   May 14th, 2010 4:23 pm ET

This may not be for everyone, but hey when you have the money, who cares, i dont have the money, wont get it gold plated but come on people stop critisizing if you dont like it just move on. I bet all you haters that if you had the money you wouldnt be saying anything and would probably get it

jackccx   May 14th, 2010 4:23 pm ET

A gold plated & diamond encrusted iPad kind of defeats the purpose of the iPad, cause you won't be able to take it anywhere outside the house.

mrb   May 14th, 2010 4:28 pm ET

That's a lot of money for the distinction of owning the ugliest iPad in existence.

Jaxon13   May 14th, 2010 4:31 pm ET

Does the $190,000 include engraving? Otherwise, the deal's off!

mo b   May 14th, 2010 4:33 pm ET

If it was mine I'd put it on a chain and wear it around my neck. I would also create a big graphic for the screen that says "AWESOME DUDE" and has a flashing arrow pointing toward my face. See – the image would reorient itself automatically, 'cause that's what iPads do, so even if the ipad got turned sideways it would still point toward my head.

Steven   May 14th, 2010 4:40 pm ET

For Sale: CNN AD SPACE disguised as stories.

For the right price, CNN will write 5-10 stories a day about your company and products. When we run out of things to say about your company and it's "hot" new products, we will make up things or dig around for anything – anything to put your company on the front page.

This "news" just in: Man writes suicide note...ON HIS IPAD.

steve   May 14th, 2010 5:03 pm ET

wow. That could pay for 4 teacher's jobs. Ah well.

Arawak   May 14th, 2010 5:20 pm ET

But......will it blend?

Lucky7   May 14th, 2010 5:29 pm ET

So, will some guy buy this and the next story we see is "Man gets mauled and beat upside the head with golden I-Pad during robbery?" Yeah, sounds like whatever fool buys this might be cruisin' for a bruisin' 'cause you know someone's going to leak who bought it. Probably CNN since they can't seem to get out of Apple's lap.

jimmy   May 14th, 2010 5:35 pm ET

thats the best thing ive read all day. the idea behind people who have money, is that they dont spend wastefully. you will figure this out eventually. but for now, congrats on making me laugh my tail off.

Okami   May 14th, 2010 5:36 pm ET

If you wanna engrave the ipad just do it yourself. It's made out of gold so it can be dented quite easily.

Seriously, what a waste of money and what a waste of a news article. Apple's going down anyway.

Karl   May 14th, 2010 5:40 pm ET

Let me get my checkbook....

rob   May 14th, 2010 5:41 pm ET

The thing is I could do without the diamonds. Remove those and I suspect it's much more reasonably priced at 5 grand or less.

Chase   May 14th, 2010 5:48 pm ET

I wonder what the warranty is like?

Steve, Atlanta GA   May 14th, 2010 5:50 pm ET

Dumbnfun   May 14th, 2010 5:51 pm ET

More money then brains as I always say. I was blessed with the brains or I would have money.

Chad   May 14th, 2010 5:59 pm ET

And it will be obsolete in a year, just like every other Apple product.

Derek   May 14th, 2010 6:09 pm ET

A year? It's obsolete now!

AdExec.   May 14th, 2010 6:19 pm ET

Companies that make gold cell phones etc. don't actually make them in batches. They come up with an idea and then make a prototype if needed. This looks more like a digital image that has been made to function as an advertising material. Once they advertise, then they get a sense for what people might actually pay for the item and then sell those items as custom orders to their clients. The goal of advertising is to make people believe that this product exists ( as they have done with all of us) and to create a market-share for their product through advertising. If they're lucky they will get the image onto a major news source (like CNN).
Did you know?

Retail companies pay advertising firms to set up short term contracts with news providers in order to make sure their product has priority exposure. (Apple has one with CNN)

Carl   May 14th, 2010 6:23 pm ET

Hey dad we should have got this iPad for mom

Mel   May 14th, 2010 6:28 pm ET

Why?

PCH_Dude   May 14th, 2010 6:28 pm ET

I will never buy that even if I have $75,000,000 in the bank. Why waste $330K in such nonsense?
A Ferrari? Yes, an ipad??? No frickin way! I'd rather give my $330K to some earthquake relieve fund.

CATom   May 14th, 2010 6:35 pm ET

I was going to buy an ipad but then I remebered I am not gay.

Mustafa   May 14th, 2010 6:59 pm ET

It’s cool!!!!! But I don’t like it,

Rishi   May 14th, 2010 7:07 pm ET

Well, this could be the next version of "iPad" which Steve is going to release in June 2010.......

trixen   May 14th, 2010 7:19 pm ET

all I have to say is... WHY???

Jason from Hollywood   May 14th, 2010 7:34 pm ET

Uh huh, wow you would think that with all this press on the iPad – apple would consist of more than 7% of the market...

Fellas writing these stories: The other 93% of us don't want to hear about your toy that just got bling'd

When apple comes out with a product that isn't locked down, doesn't limit the number people can buy, what devices they are allowed to use with the pad, how they should be used, and how many times you have to make love to it each week – we'll consider buying on.

It's a clique-y toy that only a few people have even bothered to buy...

Susan Stockdale   May 14th, 2010 7:51 pm ET

What happens when a new version comes out? Melt this one down and use an icepick to get the diamonds?

Oh wow, just yesterday I was shaking my head over Tom Ford's lipstick selling for $45!

Steve   May 14th, 2010 10:28 pm ET

John DeLorean did the same thing with his car. Funny how the 1980's yuppie joke and its 2010 equivalent have taken such a similar path. A worthless piece of junk clad in gold is still a piece of junk.

ching chang chong   May 14th, 2010 11:10 pm ET

pfffff gold.. ...i just got my platinum plated one with gold headphones and diamond dusted saw blade attachment for when i rob the bank to pay for it... yeah thats right.

Here we go again   May 14th, 2010 11:11 pm ET

I LOVE apple products... mostly because everything just WORKS! I WISH I had the money for this...

ching chang chong   May 14th, 2010 11:14 pm ET

almost forgot i got the nuclear battery upgrade and military satellite control app now im unstoppable!!!!1

donald mcdonald   May 14th, 2010 11:28 pm ET

I'm disappointed in CNN. I thought y'all were better than this.

William   May 15th, 2010 3:00 am ET

190,000 ? wow that's pretty cheap for apple

b.   May 15th, 2010 4:21 am ET

Why I simply adore using my Platinum (not plated) iPad! The cashmere lined black Italian leather case embossed in platinum, protects it. The back seat of a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce Phantom Stretch is the perfect environment for staying in touch, where hi-tech and luxury truly do meet. Equally, our family's private Gulfstream G650 is yet another environment where such hi-tech luxury is welcomed when traveling. I simply choose not to leave home or office without it. BTW, financing, it's really so yesterday! Paying cash is so much preferred, ta for now!

H   May 15th, 2010 8:06 am ET

The 3 "ports" at the bottom are for the speakers. People can spend money as they see fit. My guess is that what is being shown is a Photoshop created picture. When someone decides to buy one, the vendor will make one. It would seem that all who complain about CNN's stories for Apple must be reading them in order to comment.

When you don't like the PR the Article creates for Apple, then don't help by creating more awareness.

Luis Adame   May 15th, 2010 8:48 am ET

If the diamonds aren't flawless, can I get a refund?

HAHAHAHAHA do we really need an apple story a day? WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU CNN???? I used to come here for the news but this is like the 100th apple story in 2 weeks.

Sency   May 15th, 2010 6:30 pm ET

I would wait for the second version of the IPAD until I got it in gold!

http://sency.com/gold-ipad.htm

Woody   May 16th, 2010 6:24 am ET

The black apple on the back is a window for the wifi antenna, isn't it? So covering it with diamonds is going to seriously reduce the usefulness of the item.

Hideous item for bling bling idiots.

Mattq   May 16th, 2010 11:25 am ET

@Here we Go Again: Those aren't USB ports, they're the holes for the speaker.

I don't think that's the 3G version, though. The 3G version has a black plastic bit on top to allow for better cellular reception.

I can't imagine anyone will buy this thing. I mean, iPads are neato and stuff, but it's tech that's going to be obsolete in months. A year, tops. Spend a few thousand more and go get another Ferrari. At least they won't depreciate.

Mattq   May 16th, 2010 11:28 am ET

Actually, upon further review. I don't think anything that website sells is legit. I think they are all photoshop creations. Check out their "luxury televisions". It's silly.

Anonymous   May 16th, 2010 1:34 pm ET

What a waste of money.

Leah   May 17th, 2010 12:34 am ET

This is ghetto.

Anth   May 17th, 2010 5:00 am ET

and the Brits put up with money expenditure like that??? LOL

Mojo   May 17th, 2010 5:03 am ET

With the money spent here you could hire 15 workers for a year in Northern Missouri where the average yearly salary is only around $12,000 a year.

Asakuun D.   May 17th, 2010 12:38 pm ET

Some of the people around me today were talking about how the iPad is just a larger version of the iPod Touch. I do agree with them on that.

By now, I would like some updates on Microsoft's cloud-computing that I heard about somewhere...now THAT'S interesting.

BTW, @Anth: Well, note that it's a private British company, so it's probably the money the company earned, not Britain itself. So it's probably just cash flow between countries.

Rob   May 17th, 2010 12:54 pm ET

Hey, at least in this story the words "the most amazing Obama" weren't mentioned... that is rare for low rated CNN.

Nerf!   May 17th, 2010 4:28 pm ET

Wow, $190k for $5-10k in materials. Suckers...

Jami Sue Talley   May 17th, 2010 5:05 pm ET

Does it come with Pre-paid 3G ?? If so I might consider...LOL

Brian P   May 17th, 2010 8:51 pm ET

Bruce Dickinson: Soon you'll be wearing gold plated diapers.

RJ   May 18th, 2010 9:38 am ET

What an incredible waste! This is the best argument for Communism I've seen in a long while.

Wings   May 18th, 2010 4:12 pm ET

Does this model come with wings? Would this make this a iPad with wings? I think there would be a lawsuit.

John   May 19th, 2010 4:55 pm ET

I'm waiting for the article detailing Steve Job's gold-plated fecal matter. CNN just can't seem to get enough of Apple. You know somebody's hand is getting greased. On June 4th we'll probably see one of the most advanced and powerful smartphones to hit the market (no it's not an Apple product) but where's any mention of it on CNN? I guess HTC needs to start sending cash, cookies and other baked goods to the editors for them to even acknowledge it.

Special ED   May 21st, 2010 4:44 pm ET

Like all things Apple... a sign that you have more dollars than sense

Harry   May 21st, 2010 10:51 pm ET

Matt Riley   May 29th, 2010 11:52 am ET

You have to be devoid of all empathy to be able to buy something like this when so many people in the world don't even have clean water. Why even report on this? The headline should be "If nothing has sickened you today, read this!"

Paolo   June 2nd, 2010 5:13 am ET

I must agree with Matt....I think that spending that amount of money on Ipad is absolutely disgraceful!!! even if you can afford it would it not be better getting a normal one and give the rest of the money in charity! there are people loosing houses in the current economic downturn, people who are starving in every corner of the world, basic human right infringed everyday wouldn't it be better for everyone that we stop all this non-sense and start realising that those money would be better served in causes that are useful. people that buy this kind of merchandise should be ashamed!

Ovi   June 2nd, 2010 5:09 pm ET

With so many people going to bed on an empty stomarch why would anyone spend $190,000 on an iPad. How about donating that money to the poor people around the world

Paul   June 2nd, 2010 6:43 pm ET

Guys, get over it. Everyone in the office is talking about the iPad...therefore CNN is covering the stories.

Plus I'm sure CNN tracks what stories get read on their web site and the ones about the iPad probably get a lot of eyes and make them money.

If you dont want to see iPad articles, don't read them and don't comment on them. Eventually, they will go away.

Until then, Im glad these articles are on CNN and every other news outlet. The iPad will be the dominant mobile computer soon.

CJ   June 3rd, 2010 11:20 pm ET

A gold iPad....

...this is literally too stupid to make fun of.

Seriously? nobody noticed? Gold quality is denoted with a karat (that's with a K folks) rating, while diamond weight is denoted by carats. So, it's 22 karat gold, with 25 carats of diamonds. 24 karat gold is most pure, so it's good gold. And 25 carats is a lot of diamonds, but they may or may not be particularly high quality diamonds.
