5 ways to reduce cell-phone radiation

Posted: 01:03 PM ET

There's lots of news today about a long-awaited study on cell phones and brain tumors.

The study, to be published Tuesday in the International Journal of Epidemiology, turns out to be inconclusive: It found no evidence that making calls with a mobile phone against your ear increases your risk for brain cancer, but it also couldn't prove that no such link exists, according to CNN's report.

"The possible effects of long-term heavy use of mobile phones require further investigation," the study says. Some people, including GQ writer Christopher Ketcham, who recently published an in-depth look at research in this area, are skeptical that such a probe will take place, in part because of the cell phone industry's lobbying influence. Several European countries have issued precautions about mobile phone radiation.

But we'll put the debate aside for now. If you are concerned about mobile phone radiation, here are a few ways to keep these potentially damaging waves away from your brain.

Not all are 100 percent effective, and several carry a significant geek factor. (If a Bluetooth earpiece can make Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt look creepy, what will it do to you?) But who knows. If hipsters latch on, maybe these add-ons will go the way of bike helmets and become socially acceptable.

Let us know what you think of these tips, and please offer up your own in the comments below.

1. Use the speaker phone: This keeps the phone away from your ear and, if your phone has a decent speaker function already, doesn't cost you anything. Downside: Everyone in the office hears your partner yell at you for forgetting to record last night's episode of "Dancing with the Stars."

2. Don't talk. Text: This will win you younger friends and social cachet, as long as your fingers aren't too fat to navigate a QWERTY. If you're new to texting (like omg!), wikiHow has a smart guide to get your started. You probably can't send all of your communiques in 140-character bites, though. Well, unless you're this girl.

3. Buy a lower-radiation phone: CNET and the Environmental Working Group have published guides to radiation by phone model. You can use this information to guide your next cell phone purchase. The downside: This doesn't eliminate exposure. But, as they say, knowledge is power.

4. Use a headset: Some earbuds are wired to the phone; other options, like Bluetooth ear pieces, are wireless. Both put less radiation on the side of your head than a phone, according to EWG. Downside: Since there's no phone in sight, it will look like you're talking to yourself while you're walking down the street. Unexpected bonus: People in music videos do that all the time. And rock stars aren't bothered by onlookers, are they?

5. Talk less: Take this as literally as you will. You could simply limit your phone conversations, choosing to - gasp! - meet up with people in real life instead. Or, according to EWG, simply speaking less during a mobile-phone conversation can reduce your radiation exposure, too. From that group's guide: "Your phone emits radiation when you talk or text, but not when you're receiving messages. Listening more and talking less reduces your exposures." So, moral of story: less Jay, and more Silent Bob.

I thought someone did an experiment and discovered it would take over 50,000 cell phones to pop a single kernel of popcorn. Seriously? The most dangerous thing about a cell phone is killing yourself in the guide wires for the tower. (ok and maybe driving)

Iria   May 17th, 2010 2:25 pm ET

Jamion, you are an expert in this because ... ? Why are you making statements that have no scientific basis. Since we're talking about radiation here, it's hard to imagine that cells being irradiated by anything are unaffected. And since we are also talking about possibly horrible diseases, what's wrong with erring on the side of caution?

Ali   May 17th, 2010 2:30 pm ET

Cell phones already have less "radiation" since the switch from Analog to digital.

When you add up how many things transmit RF around us why are they only investigating cell phones?

What about radios, cordless phones, wifi access points, microwaves, satellite dishes, and so many more things. Many of these are closer to a frequency that is more likely to cause cancer.

ignoramus   May 17th, 2010 2:38 pm ET

Ignorance is the root of all evil.

theyknew   May 17th, 2010 2:40 pm ET

No more studies. Cellular industry should give free brain MRI scans to heavy users. Give the children one to so later on, when they are told of their tumor. You will have your proof you need. This is real.

vbscript2   May 17th, 2010 2:41 pm ET

Jamion, it's not so much the heat that's the problem as the radiation. Bombarding cells with relatively high-power RF can cause mutation, iirc. While brief exposure to high-power RF usually isn't a problem, prolonged exposure can be. Also, remember that the strength of an e-m field vs. the distance from the emission source is an inverse square law. That is, the power varies inversely with respect to the square of the distance from the source. In other words, doubling the distance between the phone and your head results in only 1/4 of the e-m field strengths inside your head. So, by the time you move the phone from 1 cm away from your head to 1 m away from your head, you have reduced the amount of power entering your head to only 1/10,000 of its previous value (a 40 dB power drop.)

moose   May 17th, 2010 2:46 pm ET

read the article in GQ..January or February I think about the dangers of cell phones..its real and happening all the time to people who spend lots of time with their heads attached to the phone ! Scarey.

vbscript2   May 17th, 2010 2:54 pm ET

"When you add up how many things transmit RF around us why are they only investigating cell phones?"

Because only cell phones are 1-3 cm from your brain and emminate enough power to reach a cell tower 2 mi. away. While bluetooth headsets and cordless phones will be right next to your head, they don't transmit anywhere close to the amount of power as a cell phone. Same for wi-fi. Radios don't matter because they're just receivers. They don't transmit anything. Same for satellite dishes. They only receive (and the signals we get from satellites are quite weak by the time they reach the earth's surface... only maybe 20 dB above the e-m noise floor.) Compare that with 100+ dB above the noise floor for a cell phone right next to you (each 10 dB = a factor of 10, so 80 dB difference = multiplying signal strength by 100,000,000.)

Also, microwaves, wi-fi, and cordless phones all operate around the same frequencies as cell phones. Cell-phones are usually either in the 900 MHz band or the 2.4 GHz band from my experience. Those are the same bands used by cordless phones and microwave ovens also use around 2.4 GHz, iirc. Most Wi-fi and bluetooth are also both 2.4 GHz band. Having said all of this, I'm not sure if any particular frequency bands are more or less likely to cause cancer than others. I would assume it's the power level moreso than the frequency that matters. If higher frequency stuff were more likely to cause cancer, we'd all be doomed because light is hundreds of thousands to tens of millions times higher frequency than RF.

Tina   May 17th, 2010 3:08 pm ET

Thanks for the tips. I personally use the headphones. I love it. Keeps my hands free.

nabil   May 17th, 2010 3:22 pm ET

All EMF radiation are harmfull ,we are living nowadays in e-smug,as for me ,I dont need proof that cell phones are bad ,because I feel its effect on me very clearly after long conversation ,I get all sorts of headaches ,pins and needles in the head feeling ,also it goes down to the legs.

nabil   May 17th, 2010 3:28 pm ET

sorry , I ment we are living in e-smog

dave   May 17th, 2010 4:02 pm ET

Mutations from radiation require that the radiation be of sufficient energy to break chemical bonds, which is the difference between "radiation" and "ionizing radiation". The radiation emitted by a cell phone is not ionizing radiation; so oddly enough it IS about the heat that can be produced by the radio waves coming from the phone since that is the sole mechanism of energy transfer between the waves and the body.
I have serious doubts that a link between cell phones and tumors will ever be demonstrated.

Chuck   May 17th, 2010 4:20 pm ET

In other news – 3 ways to not get hit by a car.

cross less streets. Don't go outside. Look both ways

David   May 17th, 2010 4:45 pm ET

Jiminy Christmas.

Light, radio energy, X-rays, and indeed all radiation is made up of individual "photons". These rays differ from each other by their individual photons' "frequency", which determines the type of radiation – a brighter light simply means that there are more photons, it does not mean that each individual photon has more energy.

Radiation can ONLY affect your DNA and cause tumors if an INDIVIDUAL photon has enough energy to change a molecule. This is why X-rays, which have a very high frequency, can cause cancer even at low exposure levels, but radio energy, which has a very low frequency, can NOT. You are getting significantly higher frequency radiation (AND significantly more of it) during a full moon than talking on a cell phone.

Even under the full heat of a sunny day, the cancer-causing radiation is the high UV light and other high frequency rays, not the visible light. RF radio energy is at a far lower frequency.

There is absolutely no way that RF radio energy can cause tumors or indeed affect your cells in any way besides marginally heating them up through absorption (such a small effect as to be meaningless). It is physically impossible.

WildBill   May 17th, 2010 5:11 pm ET

Since there have been a few cases that have, specifically, at least, been connected to cell phone usage, you have to analyze the physics: short, digital pulses of EM energy cause things to vibrate (and heat up), just like in a microwave oven. My guess is, there exists a particular DNA segment that is particularly vulnerable to this wavelength, and eventually loses key molecules due to this effect. Keep in mind, it's a very minor effect, but it's the only effect in play. Normally, apoptosis kills off "bad" cells, but eventually, cells form that mutate wildly, leading to cancerous cells. Then it's off to the races. Is everyone at risk? Probably not-hence the hue and cry when someone says it happens at all. Fifty years from now (like everything else!) we'll all look back and say " remember when we didn't know what caused cancer?".

Ernie Mercer   May 17th, 2010 5:43 pm ET

You didn't mention #6: Wear a tinfoil hat.

A bit extreme, but guaranteed to work!

Jeff   May 17th, 2010 6:39 pm ET

Wireless 2.4ghz, which is about the same frequency of cell phones, puts out a lot more power. Just not next too your head. Just like some food, use in moderation. The general public will never be told about true dangers of things as long as companies are making money from them.

Scot F   May 17th, 2010 6:56 pm ET

This entire article is retarded

Steve Johnson   May 17th, 2010 7:27 pm ET

Someday in the future people will look back at our cell phone use like we now look back at cigarette use in the past. I'm not talking about it in the addiction sense, but rather people will look back at us and think, "man those people were so dumb to keep those radiation machines glued against their heads". The evidence is out there, and it does not take a double PhD to figure out that high radiation levels for prolonged periods mess with the brain or any other part of the body you keep the phone near. The cell phone industry is a powerful industry, and let's not forget how far the cigarette groups fought against studies that smoking is bad for you, as the cell phone industry is doing now with their product.

Erik   May 17th, 2010 7:56 pm ET

@Steve Johnson: I am a physicist, and I personally know many people with PhDs in physics and biology or chemistry and biology who will tell you exactly the things I am saying here.

Science Facts:
* "Radiation" from cell phones, while described by similar physics and math as that from, say nuclear reactors, interacts *totally* differently with the human body.
*The DNA molecule is extraordinarily well characterized, and the amount of radio waves absorbed by it is very well understood.
*The amount of energy that can be absorbed by any individual DNA molecule due to a cell phone is millions of times less than the amount of energy it receives every second just due to the heat your own body produces.

Psychology Facts:
*The word "radiation" scares people.
*The word "brain tumor" scares people.
*People ignore science and often reality when they're scared.

You make your own decision... I personally have had a brain tumor, and I feel perfectly safe using my cell phone.

Joey   May 17th, 2010 7:56 pm ET

Again, cell phone radiation doesn't cause DNA damage. Ketcham has continually cited research showing this, but that work turned out to be scientific fraud, and was retracted.

Just for the record, cell phones can heat in two different ways, the phones themselves get hot from use (direct transfer), and by heating with minuscule amounts of radio waves (microwave radiation).

The only way I can think of cell phones causing cancer is to cause inflammation from heating, which might cause mutated cells to progress to cancer. Anything that heats your brain will do that, hair dryers, and even vigorous exercise.

slozomby   May 17th, 2010 8:42 pm ET

5 mw of transmit power at 1.8Ghz.
you get more radiation from operating a microwave.

Mike C   May 17th, 2010 8:48 pm ET

Cell phones are like 1000 times more dangerous and can get you killed if you talk or text while driving or even walking in an urban area. Why don't we focus on that, instead of something this ridiculous that it takes all of these studies and after 30 years, we still don't know anything for sure.

PuReWebDev   May 17th, 2010 9:34 pm ET

Inconclusive study. I bet that's the same kind of terminology they used 40 years ago, when the scientists of the day where trying to determine if there was a link between cancer and cigarette smoke.

If I had to guess, it wasn't an independent study either, it was a study partially sponsored, or in some way tainted by the hand of the cellular phone industry.

I'm no scientist, but I'm going to layout my hypothesis about the matter: Radio waves, are not providing any positive benefit by passing through your body, although they could potentially be harmful.

Gary   May 17th, 2010 9:36 pm ET

Cell phones still radiate when not talking, especially when roaming. I had a cancerous tumor (sarcoma) removed from my belt line where I used to wear my cell phone.

b   May 17th, 2010 9:40 pm ET

very good

Franko   May 17th, 2010 9:54 pm ET

Is there an antidote for cell phone radiation damage ?
Surprised that a special vitamin mix is not available.

Mart   May 17th, 2010 10:14 pm ET

the radiation has been shown to lower bone density. That may lead to osteoporosis.

Jeff   May 17th, 2010 11:11 pm ET

One thing I've gotten in the habit of doing is switching from one ear to the other when I'm talking on my cell phone. I'll listen for about 20 or 30 seconds in my right ear and then switch to the left one. I don't know if there is any logic to that, but it seems like the right thing to do. When I'm on a longer conversation plug in an earphone or turn on the speaker.

ldr   May 17th, 2010 11:14 pm ET

Guys, the most dangeous thing about cell usage is having the battery self-destruct in your back pocket while dunk and passed out.

Nick   May 17th, 2010 11:19 pm ET

I believe that it is true that it would take some number like 50,000 phones to pop a kernel of pop corn, but what people worry about is the long term effect of cell phone radiation. And we will just have to wait to learn. I for one make maybe a 1 minute call once every other week, my main form of communication is SMS (texting). I also believe that you receive more radiation while frequently flying on a plane, than the average person would using a cell phone. Again, I'm not sure how creditable that source is, but the fabric is there.

philosopharie   May 17th, 2010 11:26 pm ET

When I was in 4th or 5th grade, I remember having an assembly at school. There were members of the military and the police dept. there. They were talking about a new technology that was coming to our kitchens and were there to inform us to the dangers of it. Don't put your kitty in the microwave, you couldn't dry your shoes in the microwave.... things like that. Well, That was about 30 years ago.... They just came out with a study that in the last 30 years.... stomach cancer is significantly on the rise. Gee, who'd a thunk......

Lawrence   May 18th, 2010 1:15 am ET

What about a study on hand cancer if I use a RF Wireless Mouse?

Dave   May 18th, 2010 1:29 am ET

Jamion, you could put a popcorn kernal in an airport x-ray machine for a year and it would never pop. Yet a person exposed to that much radiation in a year would get cancer. The popcorn analogy is meaningless.

Sency   May 18th, 2010 1:43 am ET

Heroes was a great show that lost its way in season 2

bob-o   May 18th, 2010 3:07 am ET

The antidote to radiation is wheatgrass juice. It can increase the body's tolerance to radiation 2-3 times. The Air Force did a study on pilots who receive lots of radiation. Other things weaken the body's ability to resist radiation such as alcohol, sugar, smoking etc...

cat_dog   May 18th, 2010 3:08 am ET

feel a little funny on the fifth point, talk less on the phone.
why dont you suggest dont use a phone? you could save your time to list down the first 4 points.

Wissam   May 18th, 2010 5:37 am ET

Hi,
I think the thing about radiation is effective BUT not limited to cancer, and I do not believe cell phone radiation is the only reason for brain cancer, I experienced that talking on the phone more make me have headache and sleep difficult also when speaking in rural areas where towers are not close can make me headache also. talking in the left ear as some report advised had helped alot!
also I feel no headache using the Headsets either bluetooth or wired

Paddy   May 18th, 2010 6:16 am ET

I prefer to use bluetooth earpiece, and most of the times when attending the phone i say "hi, how are you", the person nearby will look at me that i am asking to him and some will say "fine, i don't remember you". But when i continue with the phone call, he will look at me strangely after noticing the earpiece.

ben   May 18th, 2010 6:21 am ET

five ways to reduce radiation

1) stop believing in the myths put forth by science sounding idiots
2) educate yourself in physics
3) put a tinfoil hat on and join your brothers
4) only come out at night. the suns rays must magnify all radiation, right?
5) get a clue

idiots. a 10 year study funded by wackos to prove their self deluded "truth" can't, so the claim it is inconclusive. Next they'll try a 20 year studay, which will again find no link, then a 30, etc.

Listen up people!!! This is BUNK!!!

Colin   May 18th, 2010 6:51 am ET

As to the second comment. I hate the old addage erring on the side of caution. I imagine I should believe in a god even though there is no proof one exists just so I'm safe in case there really is a god. Erring on the side of caution is the easy way out for ignorant people who don't want to bother searching for the truth.

giorgio serafini   May 18th, 2010 7:02 am ET

Ritengo opportuno servirsi del telefono cellulare solo per comunicazioni urgenti e di servirsi di un frasario sintetico e breve.

Dr Bill Toth   May 18th, 2010 7:11 am ET

Write a letter, send an email and "Gasp" maybe actually meet and talk with someone.

Applesfinctor   May 18th, 2010 7:25 am ET

Science experiment!!!!!

Experimental Group:
Stick a cell phone in a microwave oven and set for 5 minutes.

Control Group:
Stick my head in a microwave oven and set for 5 minutes.

Hypothesis:
Who cares! It'll be fun!
:P

In other news....

Bill   May 18th, 2010 7:46 am ET

Use a speaker phone in my presence at your own peril.
It may be a way to avoid radiation, but it's a contusion magnet!

Michael   May 18th, 2010 8:20 am ET

Hey Ernie Mercer,

I tin foil hat will not protect you from radiation. The hat must be made of solid LEAD!!!

Stephen   May 18th, 2010 9:22 am ET

The frequencies for cell phone use, at least in the U.S. are as follows.

Cellular: 824-849, 869-894, 896-901, 935-940
That includes GSM (AT&T), CDMA (Verizon) and AMPS (old analog which is pretty much no longer in use) and 3G
PCS: 1850–1910 and 1930–1990
Mostly used by Sprint/Nextel with some 3G in there
3G and 4G also use: 1710–1755 and 2110–2170 as well as 2500–2690

Derek   May 18th, 2010 9:54 am ET

I don't know for sure if cell phone use may cause brain cancer but I do notice I have more of a headache when talking on the cell phone than when talking on a landline or cordless phone. When I'm home, I use my home phone & when at work, I use my work phone to make calls. I do limit my phone conversations only because I prefer to talk to people in person or just prefer to get to the point in phone conversations. Since getting a Blackberry I find I email or text people more than I call them.

The Truth   May 18th, 2010 10:49 am ET

We are worried about radiation from a cell phone, but not with the iPod, iPad and every other electronic device people carry around with them? I have news for you if it uses electricity it emits radiation. So does all the wireless routers you walk, stand or sit by.

Also the speaker phone option should only be used when a group is listening and talking on one cell phone. Even then the group should find a quite location away from others. It is rude and disrespectfull to make everyone else have to listen to your phone call.

dan cardih   May 18th, 2010 11:18 am ET

I know one thing for sure. I get a headache sitting next to people who talk on their cellphones in public.

derecon   May 18th, 2010 11:55 am ET

Am I the only one who noticed this was posted on CNN around the same day CNN posted an article saying cell phones and brain tumors are unrelated?

Ted   May 18th, 2010 12:01 pm ET

Here is a thought. Don't talk on a cell phone 24/7 and you have nothing to worry about.

iLoveApple App   May 18th, 2010 12:02 pm ET

Don't forget the most obvious. Wrap your head in aluminum foil. Guys should also wrap their "privates" if they are concerned about reproduction.

Burbank   May 18th, 2010 12:09 pm ET

I was warned during a reading by a very good psychic back in the early 90's that they would discover that frequent usage of wireless phones against the head would cause brain tumors and now the information is coming out. I am on the phone a lot as part of my job and have always stuck to land lines for just this reason. I have a cell phone that I very rarely use, mostly use it to call if I will be late for an appointment while stuck in traffic or other similar situations.

Ben Dover   May 18th, 2010 12:09 pm ET

Seriously, everything now a days will kill you. Enough already!

Paul   May 18th, 2010 1:16 pm ET

And the people who choose to text instead of talking on their cell phones can't even develop a brain tumor. Little 15 year old blonde girls text all day long.... we should be the ones texting so we don't get a brain tumor. The little blonde girl can't get an "air-tumor".

KT   May 18th, 2010 1:38 pm ET

The most dangerous cell phone i think is those made in china which will explode even you use it properly.
So, overall, i think the phone u used is safe enough. Some dangers are inevitable.

Mike   May 18th, 2010 3:02 pm ET

@vbscript2

*sigh*

Look up the photoelectric effect. Power has nothing to do with DNA damage due to ionization. Increased power can increase heating, but has nothing to do with cancer.
Spouting off inverse square law and dB figures simply obfuscates the basic physics. The damage is frequency dependent, not power.

chris   May 18th, 2010 3:11 pm ET

someone should compare the radiation from a cell phone for an hour a day to the radiation from a electric blanket for 8 hours a night.. No one has and problem sleeping under an electric blanket...

Ralph Gentry   May 18th, 2010 3:15 pm ET

This has been done to death. Not long ago it was amature radio operators and the 2 meter and 440 band. Nothing found. Next thing you know it will be local occelators of GPS and Radar recievers and Bluetooth. With Bluetooth you almost have a radio transcever inside your head! Yea, that's got'a be safe. Let's all do that.

nelco   May 18th, 2010 3:22 pm ET

Hey! how can you assume I'm not much better looking than your "Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt?!!! Sorry to disappoint you dude, I would rather
say that may be not everybody looks like you but there's a whole bunch
out there waiting for "your hunk" to clean our shoes! Brad Pitt, come on!
I consider myself to be a real hoty, so please moussy just think before
writing your articles.

Phil   May 18th, 2010 3:43 pm ET

As someone who knows radio theory there is one other important thing people should know about using headsets with cellphones. When you plug in the headset or earpiece cord to a cellphone it acts as an antenna and actually increases the RF (radio frequency) signal strength along the length of the cord (a concept called gain). You actually probably get more RF radiation with the cord and earpiece being near your head. The solution is making sure your earpiece or headset has what is called an RF choke around the cord at the plug end which traps the RF energy. That is the cylinder knob-like device that you commonly see on your computer and audio cords. If you don't have an RF choke on your headset cord go to Radio Shack and purchase a small one, it looks like a small cylindrical donut. Wrap the cord twice through the center of the choke at the plug end of the cord and you will be all set!

Datan0de   May 18th, 2010 4:13 pm ET

Articles like this are a prime example of how mainstream news completely fails to accurately report science news.

The study showed no correlation between cell phone usage and cancer. Okay, simple enough, and corroborated by other studies which have shown the same thing.

The article then says that it can't prove that no such link exists. Of course not. It's not possible to prove a negative, as anyone with basic science literacy can tell you. This is called the null hypothesis.

The article then disregards the conclusion of the study and provides "5 ways to reduce cell-phone radiation".

Shame on you, CNN. You're part of the problem. Reading through the comments it looks like it's a big problem indeed.

Datan0de   May 18th, 2010 4:22 pm ET

@Burbank Seriously? Your "psychic" told you that it would be discovered that cell phones cause brain tumors? Even setting aside the quality of your "source", did you read the beginning of the article? The study found NO correlation! This follows other studies which have *also* found no correlation.

I hate to break it to you, but your psychic's ability to predict the future is as bad as your reading comprehension. Honesty though, I put much of the blame on CNN for posting such a screwball article in the first place.

Joreth   May 18th, 2010 4:33 pm ET

"There is no evidence to suggest that cell phones produce radiation that cause cancer ...

So let's tell you how to reduce the radiation that the evidence says either doesn't exist, or doesn't cause cancer!

We don't understand the science, but we're betting our readers don't either, so we're going for the popularity vote by feeding into the unfounded fears of the uneducated masses rather than accurate reporting & calming fears."

FAIL CNN!

It shouldn't surprise me, since all the news outlets are letting go of their science writers nowadays. But when a study says there is NO correlation, and when it is part of a series of studies that all say the same thing, that is the scientific version of "proving that it doesn't" and if your writers had any clue how science and the scientific method worked, you wouldn't make such entry-level mistakes.

Media outlets getting the science so astronomically wrong as in this article are why the US has such a low scientific literacy rating and why we will not hold our position as a world superpower in the future if trends continue. In the future, superpowers will not be solely determined by might, they will be determined by leading the world in science and technology ... and the US is falling further and further behind.

Larry   May 18th, 2010 4:48 pm ET

5 ways to lower exposure to phone radiation:

1. Get off the phone.
2. Shut up and get off the phone.
3. Stop talking on the phone for 75% of the waking day.
4. Have actual face to face conversations with people.
5. Shut up and get off the phone.

Josh   May 18th, 2010 4:53 pm ET

Wow, this article is dumb, any form of wave is technically a form of radiation. Sound, Light.... radiation.

All those solutions are idiotic, did some intern sit at a desk and brainstorm these up

Michael   May 18th, 2010 5:02 pm ET

Jamion is absolutely right. While there is not a single confirmed instance of illness from cellphone radiation, thousands of people have been (and are today being) maimed and killed by thoughtless idiots yapping empty drivel into their wireless devices while driving motor vehicles. The worst part is that they aren't even saying anything important that couldn't wait until they get home.

EMF (Electro Magnetic Fields) have been widely researched and questions about cell phone radiation safety are considered unsettled. Several research teams from various countries report a higher risk of developing brain and salivary gland cancer among high-volume, long-term cell phone users compared to people who use cell phones less often. Other research teams have found that cell phone radiation may cause serious problems in children, spur neurological changes in adults, and damage sperm.

Firstly – I think some commenters should all be a little less arrogant and a little more cautious when it comes to considering the risks of something that we all know radiates something – right next to our brains.

Secondly, there's a new application called Tawkon that claims to show you when you're exposed to radiation and help you avoid it, and basically tells you when you should do 4 of the 5 steps in this article. I'm going to get it – just for peace of mind if nothing else

I can't believe the comment about electric blankets. Electric blankets have all but been banned totally. Especially with pregnant women they have been found to cause great birth defect risks and I would neve rwant to wrap myself with an E-M field around my body. That's been taboo for many years now. The frequency involved, 60 Hz is way lower , but the risks are way too real.

The 3G iphone

Extracts from the manual.

iPhone’s SAR measurement may exceed the FCC exposure guidelines for body-worn operation if positioned less than 15 mm (5/8 inch) from the body (e.g. when carrying iPhone in your pocket). For optimal mobile device performance and to be sure that human exposure to RF energy does not exceed the FCC, IC, and European Union guidelines, always follow these instructions and precautions: When on a call using the built-in audio receiver in iPhone, hold iPhone with the dock connector pointed down toward your
shoulder to increase separation from the antenna. When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular network, keep iPhone at least 15 mm (5/8 inch) away from the body, and only use carrying cases, belt clips, or holders that do not have metal parts and that maintain at least 15 mm (5/8 inch) separation between iPhone and the body. If you are still concerned about exposure to RF energy, you can further limit
your exposure by limiting the amount of time using iPhone, since time is a factor in how much exposure a person receives, and by placing more distance between your body and iPhone, since exposure level drops off dramatically with distance.

Seizures, Blackouts, and Eyestrain A small percentage of people may be susceptible to blackouts or seizures (even if they have never had one before) when exposed to flashing lights or light patterns such as when playing games or watching video. If you have experienced seizures or blackouts or have a family history of such occurrences, you should consult a physician before playing games (if available) or watching videos on your iPhone. Discontinue use of iPhone and consult a physician if you experience headaches, blackouts,
seizures, convulsion, eye or muscle twitching, loss of awareness, involuntary movement, or disorientation. To reduce risk of headaches, blackouts, seizures, and eyestrain, avoid prolonged use, hold iPhone some distance from your eyes, use iPhone in a well lit room, and take frequent breaks.

Aside from the cancer debate, electromagnetic radiation from cell phones may have effects on the central nervous system that are not yet well understood. It may interfere in some fashion with the regular signals sent between nerve cells. For example, many people who carry their cell phone habitually in one pocket experience the sensation of having the cell phone in their pocket when it is not actually there, similar to the "phantom limb" syndrome amputees experience. I don't understand why cell phone companies can't make extra money by designing phones with better cases that offer a little extra shielding, at least on the side of your body that will be in contact with the phone. If they don't want to admit they're in the wrong about radiation, they could market it as a creature comfort or make it the next fashion... I hate that sweaty feeling from a hot cell phone on the side of my face after I've been on it for a while anyway. Who wouldn't want to buy the NEW! Cool Touch Cell from Samsung or Nokia or whoever...

Another good reason not to have a cell phone! I continue to refuse to get one despite looks of dismay that I don't have one. I don't need one and have never understood why anyone else does. I have a home phone and an office phone, each with an answering machine. And I have OnStar in the car for emergencies. That's enough! I don't need to be speaking to someone while standing in line at the post office or roaming the grocery aisles. Get a life, people.

Research was done on all the different studies findings recently. The results were that 75% of the studies funded by the industry showed no ill effects (higher rates of cancer) from cell phone use. The results from Independent Studies (that is non-government or cell phone funded) showed that 75% of the results pointed to higher than normal rates of cancer, specifically tumors on the right side of the head. Who do you believe? Check out all the cell phone bans going on across Europe. See who they believe.

There are a number of studies suggesting that there is a correlation between cell phone radiation and biological cell death and reproduction in insects, especially with GSM 900 phones.

"The results show that the reproductive capacity decreases almost linearly with increasing exposure duration to both GSM 900 and DCS 1800 radiation, suggesting that short-term exposures to these radiations have cumulative effects on living organisms. Additionally, our results show again that GSM 900MHz radiation is slightly more bioactive than DCS 1800MHz radiation, at the same exposure durations and under equal radiation intensities, as shown in our previous experiments [5]."

WOULD YOU STICK YOUR HEAD

IN A MICROWAVE OVEN?

EXPERT DISCUSSES CONTROVERSY
OVER CELL PHONE SAFETY.

Today there are an estimated 5 billion cell phones in the world. In Europe 90% of the population uses them, compared to 80% in the US. The US. Market is growing quickly especially among teens and children who are at the greatest risk. . All this points to one fact: cell phones are BIG business. Even though the health risks from radiation are being reported and the evidence is mounting, the industry giants continue to claim their products are safe.
Shelly Kalnitsky, an authority on cell phone issues wants to ask you three questions.
1. Do you now believe nicotine is non-addictive?
2. Do you now believe that cigarette smoking does not cause lung cancer?
3. Do the words “radiation” and “microwaves” sound like something you want going into your brain?

“The jury is still out on the extent of the long term effects of cell phones” says Kalnitsky “but we are discovering more evidence of cell phone dangers.” He points to a reporting site http://www.cprnews.com which documents hundreds of articles , studies and research on cell phone dangers under world news.
He discusses :
• How the industry suppresses negative stories.
• The increased risks cell phones pose to teens and children.
• Why current hands free kits are more dangerous.
• New products that can reduce the risk.
• Safety tips in cell phone usage.

Kalnitsky is an expert on the subject and can add insight on recent scientific findings as well as discuss protection devices such as shields, new hands free radiation free kits and safety tips that can offer a remedy for cell phone users.

MOUNTING EVIDENCE AND NEW STUDIES SHOW THAT CELL PHONES & CORDLESS PHONES CAN LEAD TO TUMORS AND MAJOR HEALTH PROBLEMS
Boca Raton resident and Director of Cell Phone Radiation News Bureau speaks out and finds solution to the problem- a radiation screen for cell phone and handheld phones called WaveShield that removes up to 99% of the radiation from the ear that could cause tumors.
-American youth in the greatest danger-

• Today, there are an estimated five billion cell phones used around the world. The U.S. cell phone market is growing exponentially, especially among teenagers and children. Cell phones are big business. However, studies have linked major health risks from the radiation emitted by cell phones.
• When a call comes in to your cell phone, it travels through a microwave tower. Radiation comes in through the antenna of the phone and runs through the entire phone. The greatest danger lies in the inner ear, which has the highest absorption rate of radiation in the entire body. For those people who use wired headsets and think they are safe, they are not. In fact, wired headsets and wireless headsets such as the Bluetooth, conduct as much as three times more radiation into the ear than the phone itself. Reports also show that cordless phones were of equal or even greater risk than cell phones.
• Cell phone radiation has been in the news quite a bit lately and blamed for the illnesses and deaths of some famous people. For example, attorney Johnny Cochran died of a brain tumor right behind his ear; and his daughter swears it was caused by using a cell phone. Senator Ted Kennedy had a glyoma, one of the three tumors to which cell phone usage has been linked.
• Perhaps the scariest reality of it all is that children are at the greatest risk for radiation exposure, since their skulls are thinner, making it easier for radiation to go deeper into the body. In fact, France has banned all advertising to children and several European countries have age restrictions for cell phone use. Interestingly enough, the United States has done nothing.
• Even though these terrible health risks from radiation are being reported, and the evidence is mounting, the industry giants continue to claim that their products are safe. In fact, there currently is not even a law that says that cell phone manufacturers must place a warning on their packages to inform people of the potential health risks. One might see a correlation between the cell phone industry’s continual denial of the problem with that of the tobacco industry. In fact, one may say that the cell phone industry giants are starting to sound an awful lot like Big Tobacco.
• A little over ten years ago, Boca Raton resident, Shelly Kalnitsky, was watching ABC’s 20/20, when he saw a twenty minute feature story on the dangers and potential risks of cell phone usage. The news show interviewed lobbyists and wireless representatives, who all denied there was a problem. Kalnitsky was compelled to learn more about what he had just heard. He began researching the world news regarding cell phones and discovered that information abroad included studies conducted by prominent scientists, who reached very different conclusions than what is being reported in the U.S. Kalnitsky got very concerned, especially about the danger to children, misinformation about hands-free kits and a lack of independent and unbiased reporting on cell phone issues.
• Kalnitsky was so disturbed by what he found, that he established the Cell Phone Radiation News Bureau (www.cprnews.com), a one-stop information center and source for learning more about the potential health risks from cell and cordless phones. This bureau is intended to keep the public consumer informed and to prevent future health-related problems from cell phone use.
• As director of the Cell Phone Radition News Bureau, Kalnitsky felt that there must be something he could do to protect people from this harmful radiation. Kalnitsky found patented material in Asia that blocked radiation from penetrating the material. He found that this material was successful in blocking 97% of radiation, so he spent years of research applying the science behind this material to something that can help be used on cell phones. Thus, the WaveShield was developed.
• Wave Shield promotes protection when you make or receive a call on your cell and cordless phones by helping to reduce the impact of electromagnetic energy threatening your health. When sent to an FTC listed lab, results showed that the Wave Shield blocked up to 99% of the radiation from entering the soft tissue of the ear, where all the nerves and blood cells are located. Additional testing has been done in Germany and Russia, all proving the Wave Shield did exactly as it claimed in protecting individuals from potential health risks.
• The Wave Shield products fit all cell phone models, cordless phones, and there are even devices that can be used to block the radiation coming off computer and laptop screens. The WaveShield headset is the best kind of headset to use, as it is a combination shielded wire and air-tube headset.
• The fact is ALL cell and cordless phones emit electromagnetic radiation. Studies indicate a strong connection between cell phone use and health problems. Children and teens who begin to use mobile phones before the age of 20 are at the greatest risk. However, there is a way to provide protection when using cell and cordless phone; and that is with the Wave Shield. Up until now, there was no proof that cell phones cause cancer and health problems; but the evidence coming out is now overwhelming. WaveShield is a proven and tested product that reduces the potential health risk.

Today there are an estimated seven billion cell phones in the world. The US. market is growing quickly, over 285 million cell phones . All this points to one fact: cell phones are BIG business. Even though the health risks from radiation are being reported and the evidence is mounting, the industry giants continue to claim their products are safe.
Shelly Kalnitsky, an authority on cell phone issues wants to ask your listeners three questions.
1. Do you now believe nicotine is non-addictive?
2. Do you now believe that cigarette smoking does not cause lung cancer?
3. Do the words “radiation” and “microwaves” sound like something you want going into your brain?

“The jury is still out on the extent of the long term effects of cell phones” says Kalnitsky “but we are discovering more evidence of cell phone dangers.” He points to a reporting site cprnewsbureau.com which documents hundreds of articles , studies and research on cell phone dangers.

CNN is full of crap. They do cause cancer, especially those jawbone headsets. The tumors are always on the same side of the head they are worn. Ever notice after a long conversation on your cell phone that you have that hot sensation on the same side? That is because the phone is literally microwaving your brain!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EMF's are indeed a real danger, especially today with the large amount of devices and services that run 24/7. Satellites, tvs (especially hdtvs), cell towers, power lines, radio frequencies, cell phones, laptops, and anything else that transmits or receives a frequency. there are some real good options for protection out there. I personally use the ewater EP2 Pendant. You have to get use to wearing it though. Great Product.

I personally have had the pleasure to meet the OWNER of Ewater, Fred Van Liew (also know as the water doctor) at one of his seminars that I attended that he put on for our club. He is a pioneer in the emf, energy, & water revitalization industries!

On the issue of wired headsets conducting more radiation in your ear, my sense is that this is not accurate (http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/05/31/6-tips-for-minimizing-cell-phone-radiation/). When you get to microwave frequencies it's kind of different than traditional radio AM/FM frequencies. Having any length piece of wire is no longer a good antenna. You need the wire to be the right length for the antenna and to transmit microwave radiation you'll need to use a hollow tube known as a wave guide ( http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_2/chpt_14/8.html ). Without taking these measures the radiation starts to diminish. So my opinion is that there is some radiation that does travel, but its quite a bit less than with the phone on your head. An RF choke would probably further reduce radiation.

The other thing to consider is when the phone is next to your head, your head messes up the cell phone antennas optimal output. So the phone is forced to crank up the radiation output to make up for your head being next to the antenna. By using a wired headset the phone can drop down its power output, reducing radiation as well as conserving battery life.

Bluetooth shouldn't be used for long periods of time, they should be turned on and off between calls because the radiation and SAR levels accumulates over time and goes straight into your eye and to your brain. More information on this can be found at www.http://greenswaninc.com/userguide.html

Fungal diseases may sound mysterious and dangerous, but they are often caused by fungi that are common in the environment. Fungi can be found in soil, on plants, trees, and other vegetation, and on our skin, mucous membranes, and intestinal tracts. Most fungi are not dangerous, and some can even be helpful – for example, penicillin, bread, wine, and beer use ingredients made from fungi. However, some types of fungi can be harmful to health; like bacteria and viruses, some fungi can act as pathogens or toxins. `-.:

So basically keep the phone as far away as possible. This is exactly what it states the powerful cell phone companies taking control
of the situation.

To be fare you would have to show damage to a brain in a given area after years of cell phone use. However at that point the cell
phone companies would counter and find another reason for the damage.

It will take decades to prove.

I have had difficulty clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out.

out how to begin. Any suggestions or hints? Cheers!
