Third-grader wins Google doodle contest

Posted: 04:44 PM ET

Thanks to a box of colored pencils and a whole lot of creativity, Makenzie Melton now has a $15,000 college scholarship, a netbook computer and a $25,000 technology grant for a new computer lab at her school.

How did a third-grader from El Dorado Springs, Missouri, score the prizes? By winning Google’s 2010 Doodle 4 Google contest.

Melton’s doodle, titled “Rainforest Habitat," will appear on the Google homepage Thursday.

The doodle, which expresses Melton’s “concern that the rainforest is in danger,” was chosen over more than 33,000 submissions by students - ranging from kindergarten to twelfth grade, according to a post on the Official Google Blog.

Melton and the rest of the applicants were asked to develop a doodle for the site’s home page based on the theme, “If I could do anything, I would…” A panel of “well-known illustrators, cartoonists and animators” helped choose the winning doodle, according to the blog.

The regional and state finalists’ doodles can be found on the official Google Blog.

very nice work

anonymous   May 26th, 2010 7:57 pm ET

Pretty advanced lines and concepts for a 3rd grader. Sure they did this by themselves without help ?

bob   May 26th, 2010 7:58 pm ET

this is great artwork

bob   May 26th, 2010 7:59 pm ET

the google word is not clear therefore it is bad

bob   May 26th, 2010 8:00 pm ET

i bet the little kid didnt do it by himself and is he a boy or girl?

Supporter   May 26th, 2010 8:16 pm ET

Why can't people jsut genuinely be happy for someone when something good like this happens to them? Is it really necessary to criticize or suggest that the drawing was not completed by the kid? You have no idea what the talents of this child might be. Good job Makenzie! Congratulations!

anonymous   May 26th, 2010 8:48 pm ET

pretty nice picture.

badfrog   May 26th, 2010 8:57 pm ET

RAIN FOREST ??? is that anything like a JUNGLE ???

I'd hate to watch a movie called George of the RainForest... and my hero TARZAN lived in a jungle..... Burn down the rain forest and replant the JUNGLE

znil   May 26th, 2010 9:05 pm ET

I believe a 3rd grader did this... it's so bad...

Teacher   May 26th, 2010 9:35 pm ET

Great Job... I am sad to see that people have nothing better to do then to make false comments. We are proud of all her hard work.

I voted for you! Congratulations!

Cheree DeRiemer   May 27th, 2010 12:17 am ET

Well done. I look forward to seeing it on the Google site.

Keeks   May 27th, 2010 12:17 am ET

I don't know if anyone else looked at the entries chosen as finalists for each grade range, but honestly this wasn't the best concept nor the best drawing out of them all. However, very talented 3rd grader and I'm happy for anyone who would win this. Very fortunate and lucky! Congratulations.

Kevin C. Thomas   May 27th, 2010 12:19 am ET

Beautiful work. I just went to the Google homepage to check on something and this beautiful doodle stopped me immediately.

Congratulations Makenzie and remember to keep drawing.

This is my favorite google picture ever :-)

Ms. Walsh   May 27th, 2010 12:56 am ET

I am Makenzie's teacher, and YES she did do this by herself in class! She is a 3rd grader in my gifted classroom. It is a shame that some people feel the need to criticize others or feel the need to write rude comments on the Internet. We would have been happy for any of the artists. They were all very creative and great! So sad to think some people cannot follow the Rules of Conduct set forth by CNN. Congratulations to you Makenzie and your Rainforest Habitat...the correct terminology, and congratulations to all of the other finalists!

MoMo   May 27th, 2010 2:34 am ET

it's really good for a third grader. especially the "e"

but I think there was drawings that were a lot better, done by older students.

ananomy   May 27th, 2010 4:02 am ET

Probally all the commenters who supported are the boy/girl's family.

I'm sort of sure that it wasn't done completly by him/her. but creativity was good

Frank   May 27th, 2010 7:49 am ET

Well said Ms. Walsh. I cannot draw anything much less a stick figure but some people do have talents beyond negative critizism and rude comments, so congratulations to Makenzie.

Kyle   May 27th, 2010 8:33 am ET

The drawing is very good and full of color. The picture may not have been the best out of all of them but you have to remember that a third grader did it and thats whats so amazing. Im in high school and i dont think i could be that creative or draw that well and ive taken an art class every year since the 1st grade. Maybe im wasting my time in art classes or maybe this little kid is just ridiculously awesome.

Asakuun   May 27th, 2010 8:38 am ET

I actually didn't remember there was a wonder my classmates were sketching "Google"s for a while.

I just wish that I could be recognized for my abilities in drawing also....

Well, that's not likely.

Husain   May 27th, 2010 8:41 am ET

Great work. I am happy to see corporations like Google are encouraging children's talents.

TrappedAtWork   May 27th, 2010 8:52 am ET

that is so cute! I completely forgot why I went on to Google when I saw the picture. congratulations! I love the little fish in the 'g'.

Rich   May 27th, 2010 9:00 am ET

There's a special place in hell for all you rude and negative RE-RE's being haters. There's something sick and mentally wrong with anyone who puts down a little girl in 3rd grade for winning a scholarship. Grow up. Nobody cares if you "think" there were better drawings. This was the winner and rightfully so. Get over it. Congrats McK..

creative   May 27th, 2010 9:11 am ET

i was a very talented artist in 3rd grade too but the perfection of these lines is far too advanced for a 3rd grader. i'm guessing mommy or daddy drew the outlines and the 3rd grader just colored it in. too bad. another example of kids being "given" something for nothing.

Marisa   May 27th, 2010 9:11 am ET

All thing possible to Makenzie Melton who believed HER doodle
would Win! Congratulations to Miss Melton and to the
Community of El Dorado Springs Missouri! Keep doing doodles pays off!

Ka-chiga Ka-chiga   May 27th, 2010 10:02 am ET

Palm trees don't grow in rainforests or jungles. Clownfish don't live their either: they live in coral reefs. Coral snakes live in Southeastern andortions of southcentral, and small parts of the southwestern US, not the jungle/rainforest. Depending on where this jungle is its possibel ladybugs exist there, but the largest rainforest is in South America and no ladybugs exist there. Lastly are those cabage heads?!

This FAIL has been brought to you by the US Dept of Education.

kathy-el do   May 27th, 2010 10:34 am ET

Too bad some people have to be so rude and hateful and can't just be happy for something and someone that is of a positive nature!! I know Makenzie and she is a very talented and gifted young person! She worked very hard on this doodle and being the perfectionist she is ,YES, she did do this artwork HERSELF!!!! Everyone in her community is very very proud of her and we consider it an honor to have her representing us!! A big CONGRATULATIONS to Makenzie and well wishes to all the creative entries!!!

Ka-chiga Ka-chiga   May 27th, 2010 10:47 am ET

Want a cookie Kathy-el do? :D

Anon   May 27th, 2010 10:52 am ET

Wow, do some of you have nothing better to do than come on here and bash a third grader for her artwork? You people are pathetic.

NC7thGradeTeacher   May 27th, 2010 10:57 am ET

Congratulations Mackenzie!!!!!!! This picture is EXCELLENT! As for all of the HORRIBLE comments...this is what is wrong with the world today. People are constantly looking for ANYTHING to use in order to spew their nonsensical, negative comments. This baby worked hard and I'm pretty sure her parents did help...but I'm sure it was purely with encouraging words and attention. Would you want anything less? We're always screaming for parents to be involved with their children but we bash them for it also. Anyone who has anything negative to say should definitely keep it to themselves...because after all, we are talking about a THIRD GRADER! SMH...

Ka-chiga Ka-chiga   May 27th, 2010 11:06 am ET

Shouldn't you be in school there Ms. NC7thGradeTeacher? Or are you playing hookie from your duties to edumucate the younglings of our society?

Brandi   May 27th, 2010 11:09 am ET

Some of you are absolutely ridiculous. Don't you have something better to do than be so negative and critical about a 9-year-old's drawing? Some kids are great artists, and others aren't. Makenzie did a great job and has been given a great honor in winning this contest. Let this little girl have her moment to feel proud of her accomplishment! Focus your bad comments on people who actually deserve them.

Ka-chiga Ka-chiga   May 27th, 2010 11:15 am ET

Who's being negative? We are providing our critique of the work presented. So its not ok to be, as you put it, "negative" towards the artist, but you would rather we aim our negativity else where?! Now that just amazes me!

Jenn   May 27th, 2010 12:27 pm ET

Congratulations, Makenzie! Your artwork is beautiful. Looks like you have some great talent in your class, Ms. Walsh! =)

NicC   May 27th, 2010 4:00 pm ET

I honestly find this cute. shame on people saying stuff like "it's not clear enough" or "she can't draw that"

just because you need glasses and your artistic talent is a stick-figure at best doesn't mean everyone is down at your level with you...

kathy-el do   May 27th, 2010 4:33 pm ET

Oh, I would love chocolate chip, soft and chewy, Chips Ahoy cookies!! They are my absolute favorite, Ka-chiga Ka-chiga!!

You Rock Makenzie ;)

I am a pretty decent artist NOW, but when I was in third Grade I sucked, BIG TIME! I am very proud of Makenzie for winning the contest. the Idea was Creative and the drawing was AMAZING! :)

wow really guys?!? grow up i mean seriously. this is a beautiful picture and i'm very proud of her : ) and so is everyone else from eldo!! so stop being so rude, i'm pretty sure you guys are older and don't need to be so mean to a third grader.

Artist 2 Artist   May 27th, 2010 6:55 pm ET

First of all CONGRATULATIONS MACKENZIE!!!! Your picture is wonderful and El Dorado Springs is sooooo proud of you!! Your hard work proved what obviously all the judges felt WAS the best of the best!! Also, congratulations to all the finalists and all your beautiful drawings.
Secondly...shame on all you negative people for putting down a 9 year old! She has more class than any of you critisizing her. She is a very sweet girl and she does not deserve being put down for something positive that she worked so hard on. Is is too hard for you to be happy for her and leave it at that??

Pandora   May 27th, 2010 7:15 pm ET

Congratulations Mackenzie! Your drawing is beautiful and you are an inspiration!

It is wonderful to see that even at such a young age these children are aware of the issues that face this world and want to be part of an effective solution to the problem. Good job sweetie, best wishes to you!

Poor poor Heather. I am sure your town of roughly 4,000 people is a lovely place. But, I will be sure to wave on my way around it. How is El Do's large bandstand these days?

julie   May 28th, 2010 8:48 am ET

how can a third grader draw such thing?
I think it is great!

Janet North   May 28th, 2010 10:20 am ET

Before you make an ugly comment that you have nothing to back it you should keep it to yourself. Yes she did do it by herself and we are very proud of her in El Dorado Springs, MO. We may be small town but we have amazing kids! Way to go Makenzie!

Victor   May 28th, 2010 11:23 pm ET

Looks very good for a 3rd grader. sure can draw better than me. Congrats. i like it how google does this for us teens and children.

Beautiful picture ... simple, clear lines; colours are great; theme is worthy. Congrats, Makenzie! Hopefully, the rainforests will still be flourishing by the time you get to that college. And with the efforts of people like you, they will be. :)

Bill @WII   May 29th, 2010 8:56 pm ET

awesome!! I wouldn't have come up with that!! Sometimes it takes the little ones to achieve what we can't.

Look at how cool that is!

M   May 30th, 2010 10:44 am ET

Ka-chiga Ka-chiga: And you're doing that "critique" thing to the work of a third grader? Looks like you're more FAIL than what you're saying.

Congratulations to Makenzie Melton! :)

Sometimes I wonder why CNN even bothered to let us post comments on the articles they post. It is sad to see so many ppl filled with negativity over this drawing.

Good job Mackenzie, and keep it up with your creativity. Do not listen to the negative posts here as they are not going to help you.

I just wanted to say well done girl! Your doodle is amazing! Myself and everyone else in El Dorado are so very proud of you! Don't let any of these negative comments on here or anywhere else for that matter get to you. Some of these people are just jealous and very rude. Oh and to the people who don't think she drew it herself in class: I was in the same gifted class she is now in, we did everything by ourselves so we could challenge ourselves. It's a gifted class the students in there are gifted in different ways. Mackenzie is a very young and gifted artist. :) Keep doodling. Make some more dreams come true. You're a great artist. :)

I love how everyone will praise a child prodigy for singing, dancing, playing musical instruments, spelling and solving complex mathematical equations, but as soon as one submits an awesome drawing or complex science project "they must have had adult help". Congrats kid, keep drawing and ignoring the naysayers.

Makenzie I think you did a splendid job and everyone else making nasty comments are just jealous, because they didn't have the creative mind to do what you did! Keep drawing because you're great at it! And don't even mind these other immature people who have nothing better to do with their lives but say bad things about people! ElDo is proud of you, and you should be proud and YOU AND YOUR DRAWING WON!! so that's all that matters! =)

anonymous   June 3rd, 2010 9:50 am ET

And Makenzie it is a great drawing! I am happy that you won..

And Ms. Wash you can not judge these people because when I won an essay contest you looked me died in the eye and told me that I should not have won. You told me my essay was not good enough. Well you know what that was your opinion, and it is natural for people to question her work when they do not know her leave of skill.

I think goole should have chosen somthing else. You know I mean
she did great for her age, but she didn`t need to win overall. I thought
some of those others would have been better choices. She also didn`t
need to win because she is "gifted" I know this is kind of off subject,
BUT gifted is the word that they thought you were smarter than anyone
else even though you weren`t you just had ADHD or something so they make you miss recess to see what flats a marble or a sponge and miss wednesday just to go to EEE and just to make your classmates feel stupid

Jackie Aldrete   May 5th, 2011 11:48 pm ET

Really??You guys are critizing a third grader i just saw this picture and knew i would never be able to draw something like that, but why would you want to show jealosy and hatred!!???oh and this is especially for you ki chaga kichaga:
AND FOR YOU Mckenzie, good luck in the future, congratulations, and dont ever let anybody tell you you can't do something!!!!keep drawing!!

Jackie Aldrete   May 5th, 2011 11:55 pm ET

oh and grace, gifted means that they no more and they don't need to be in a class where they are not getting enough education. everybody is different!!!!and they dont even want to make the kids feel bad.., alll they want to do is give the kids what they deserve and need in order to succed and achieve not only for their benefit, but for our future as well because the kids of today s the future for tomorrow so dopnt bring them down with dunb comments but strive them up with encouragement and when she becomes the president or a cop or even a lawyer you will be at home wishing you got an education as much as she did instead of hating that you didn't!!!!!!!
