HP's iPad competitor will have two video cameras

Posted: 12:44 PM ET

In an apparent attempt to steal some buzz from Apple's brand-new iPad, Hewlett-Packard on Monday released some details about its "slate" computer, which will go on sale later this year.

A new blog post and video highlight some apparent differences between the two gadgets: The HP device has two video cameras, a USB connection and also support for Flash animations.

The lack of those features has been a consistent gripe among iPad reviewers.

Like the iPad, the HP gadget is a medium-sized, touch-screen device that acts kind of like a laptop without a keyboard, and kind of like a stretched-out smartphone. In a blog post, HP vice president and chief technology officer Phil McKinney says the Slate will let people create content as well as consume it:

Think about the last time you chatted with friends over Skype on your notebook. Or uploaded a picture from your mobile phone to Facebook or Flickr. How about the last time you viewed images or video from an SD card or a USB device. We know that you expect to be able to capture and share digital content on your mobile devices. And the HP slate device excels there.

A short YouTube video posted by HP indicates the tablet-like device will have two video cameras - one for taking images of the environment, and one that captures the person holding the device. That second camera could be used in live video chats, for example.

HP briefly showed off the device at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, and has since been leaking videos with new details about how it will work. There's no word yet on how much HP's device will cost, or exactly when it will be released.

No wonder both you and your company are unproductive since you are still using 80s HP deskto at work.

"Microsoft is a gaming company while Apple products are for productive professionals who have graduated from living in their parent's basement."

Wow Bob you actually said that! Every company I have worked at for the last 28 years has been Microsoft based. Maybe you should get out of your basement more often.

Todd   April 6th, 2010 2:31 pm ET

The iPad is overhyped. The performance (aside from battery life) is mediocre at best, its inability to multi-function is frustrating and it's price is too high.

Windows 7 is leaps and bounds better than Vista and XP. I'm running 7 on my media center PC, with some crazy accessories and their associated drivers, and I have yet to have it blue screen on me.

But hey, that iPad sure is neat lookin'.

My question is this, with no physical keyboard, isn't it going to be harder to write incoherent babble that you call a "masterpiece" in some trendy coffee shop?

Does MS, HP & Apple pay to write comments? How does it work??

"Wow Bob you actually said that! Every company I have worked at for the last 28 years has been Microsoft based. Maybe you should get out of your basement more often."

Microsoft created Windows as a knockoff of the Apple OS back in the day and they've been updating it only as much as they've had to ever since. They just sit back and collect the $ because they sell their product so cheaply. The only reason ANYONE uses MS in a professional setting is because it is cheap. Now they spend a lot of money on gaming R+D because they see that as the future of the company.

I bet you worked at a corporate company in a large cubicle farm. The CEOs made off with the extra money they saved because they bought cheap Microsoft products for their underlings.

[...] HP's 'slate' to have what iPad lacks [...]

ya right   April 6th, 2010 3:30 pm ET

Any person with half a brain skipped Vista and stayed with a good XP Gold image build. BSOD is a thing of the past, I have been running Win7 since before release and have not seen one BSOD. Although Apple is idot proof which is most peoples issues with Microsoft products they have no idea how to use a PC besides turn it on and open excel or word. That does not make you PC competent!

Steve O   April 6th, 2010 3:50 pm ET

MAy have to go low tech if it blue screens, Are ya listening HP? Remember the old Reset button that has become a distant memory? AS much as I dislike Apple products I have been a huge fan of HP over the years. Way to go I hope it turns out to be everything we hope for.

I LOVE the comment by Watching from NC!

They'll probably have to just make a Blue Screen of Death relief button, a physical button on the frame...

Ralphy V   April 6th, 2010 3:59 pm ET

My money is on an Android powered slate computer. If Asus or any other company was smart, they would just align themselves with Google and go that route without using a Windows OS and going directly against Apple. Look what many of the mobile phone developers are doing with Android on the smart phone market (and it's starting to show in the market share of iPhones and other smart phones). Even with the patent law suit filled by Apple, HTC is poised to gather even greater market share by releasing more robust and better looking phones using Android OS. HP has the right idea with their slate computer, but it would have been real nice to see this thing run using a modified Android OS behind the hardware...

Terry - Indiana   April 6th, 2010 4:09 pm ET

If the HP has an OS, it will be purchased by serious computer users. The iPad is a toy, with absolutely no serviceability for real users. Apple missed a real opportunity to pull Microsoft Users into the Apple Camp by failing to include an OS.

Jimmy T   April 6th, 2010 4:34 pm ET

I use both mac and PC. My wife being a graphic designer swears by mac for her work. Personally I cannot afford most Mac products. If a pc provides the functionality you need at a fourth of the price then buy a pc. For those who are bad mouthing corporations for buying pc's over macs, as if that were a bad decision, you need to grow up. How is it a smart decision to pay four times as much for a machine that will be used for word processing and low to no graphic applications? You are all sheep, being herded by either Steve or Bill.

bernard   April 6th, 2010 4:56 pm ET

anyone who says that Macs are slower than PCs must not have actually used them for any WORK. (like 3d movie animation rendering or something) fact is, they all use the latest Intel chips, so speed isn't an issue.

you can also install Windows on a Mac and boot straight into it, then you'd have a really well-made, fast PC, with a more sturdy design and nicer look. (you'll still get the windows viruses and spyware while booted into windows – sorry) at least you can boot back into OS X when you're tired of having to allow security pop-ups every minute!

Ton Nevig   April 6th, 2010 4:58 pm ET

@Watching from NC
"What I fear is that this device will be powered by some form of Windows OS ... how can you Ctl-Alt-Del when it blue-screens without a keyboard? :-)"

Well I have a gripe with my 16gb iPod touch. I tried to use it as a web reading device. However it crashed so much I gave up on it. And with the battery sealed in the device the complicated reboot process only worked half the time. The other half i had to wait till the battery ran out.

Ipad.. Yawn   April 6th, 2010 6:22 pm ET

Where the iPad is nothing more than an iPod Touch with a larger screen, the slate appears to truly be streamlined netbook. The HP slate will give the public what they really want from such devices.

They will still only be suitable for a very small niche market, however this will easily dominate the iPad for any consumers that care to own more than an apple logo.

i4U   April 6th, 2010 6:33 pm ET

Do you want to know what's missing on the iPad? Check my list out at:

Someone   April 6th, 2010 6:39 pm ET

Absolutely hate people who think this HP gadget is less worthy OR better than the iPad. The damn machine isn't even out yet and you're claiming it's better or not based on articles and leaked footage??

What I can tell you is that HP has a chance to 1up Mac's iPad product between now and its release date. And until HP's product hits the market, STOP MAKING DUMB @$$ ASSUMPTIONS THAT THIS IS LESS WORTHY or BETTER.

Brat   April 6th, 2010 7:08 pm ET

oh and p.s.
for all the tired blue screen jokes you do know that windows reboots automatically right? it creates a dump file and reboots but i've only seen the blue screen 2 times. once after running my system for over a year without restoring (and i am a heavy computer user) and when i had a problem with an update when i restored my system. both times it corrected itself and rebooted so no control alt delete necessary.
if you got the blue screen a lot you were either a. running win me or were a terribly inept p.c. user.

Meatlad   April 6th, 2010 7:12 pm ET

Doh! I got really excited for a minute there when I read that it will have two cameras. I thought, wow! Parallax filming? They're going to let you film in 3D and potentially have 3D Skype chats? Sweet! But no, just one camera on each side, which is useful too I suppose.

LeCanadian   April 6th, 2010 7:32 pm ET

Has anyone seen this yet...

..and yet Ipad lacks flash, usb, a cam, has spotty wifi connectivity, and a locked OS that only runs one app at a time!!!??? Now watch the video again lol. Why Steve...WHY???

I have a jailbroken Ipod Touch 2g, and I truly enjoy it. I can run more than one app at a time and do many other things Apple doesn't like but only because its jailbroken.

I'm sure I would also enjoy the Ipad if I had one, but I don't think its a netbook or laptop killer at all.

As nice, wonderful, amazing, wonderful, excellent, revolutionary, amazing, incredible, bigger, better, amazing as it is, in terms of overall functionality and versatility I will keep my ultra light running win7 thanks.

LeCanadian   April 6th, 2010 7:38 pm ET

sorry I forgot a, far better, way better than a laptop, extraordinary, far better, cool, simple, awesome, super high quality!!!

Hilarious. They crank out generic Winblows boxes like all the other Winblows manufacturers.

BoonedockJ   April 6th, 2010 11:32 pm ET

I love it when the geeks go to war. MAC this.... PC that..... LOL who cares. I would probably try out a MAC, but wait, I use Autocad for my own artistic design work. Funny how the only way it works on MACs is through a windows OS in parallels. I guess that gaming company knows a little about work.

Matt   April 7th, 2010 12:42 am ET

"I make 8 figures and run a Mac. I'm better than RG!"

Hmm, I would expect someone in your profession to act a bit more professional rather than arguing over blog comments. But then again.. Are you sure you aren't calculating the comma and decimal places in your figures. (IE: 1,000.00) That's a bit misleading don't you think?

I myself, will hold out on the iPad for the HP Slate. It offers far more functionality than the iPad. Anyone buying into the crap that Apple is feeding deserves to be ripped off. The real reason Apple does not support flash on it's devices is because they want to limit users to apps developed and sold in their iTunes store only. HTML5 will never replace Flash. It renders way to slow to compete with Flash and causes the browser to crash more frequently due to server-script issues. And if you think getting rid of Flash will rid you from annoying Flash Ads think again, those ads can be just as easily displayed using HTML5 only cause more lagging and won't be blocked using AdBlock Plus. The reason why they do not add the USB port is to make it's buyers have to purchase all the accessories from them and charge the installation fees.

Mac users are retards that can't troubleshoot their own issues and rely on Apple's customer service to resolve their problems. Meanwhile spending lots of money on inexpensive and often times quick fixes or user errors.

Rob   April 7th, 2010 12:46 am ET

@Bob, who said "Microsoft is a gaming company while Apple products are for productive professionals who have graduated from living in their parent's basement."

Yes, of COURSE you're right. But perhaps you could then explain why so many Apple users also rely on Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and all those other "gaming" applications.

Bob, having an Apple does NOT compensate for other...shortcomings....sorry to say. But keep pinching yourself and telling yourself that you've got a special "club" that PC users can't belong too. We'll let you continue to feel special about yourselves over in your little corner. 🙂

Kris   April 7th, 2010 1:28 am ET

Why is sh**ting on the IPAD a precursor to being a PC fan? I'm a neutral consumer, and as such, don't prefer PC's or Apple products, I prefer what's better. And what is better is what is yet to come, this product is just plain old 1st gen crap.

tylercanada   April 7th, 2010 1:37 am ET

I bought a new HP laptop, DV6000, a year and a half ago... and I'm having some small problems with it... the remote control has 3 buttons out of 10 that work... their dvd player doesn't work w the entertainment keyboard, the battery life was supershort, and nowhere did I read or was told to not keep the laptop plugged in so now my battery works for maybe 5 min, useless. The icon displaying battery power doesn't accurately work. The system restore is iffy if it works.
I called HP a couple of times... received resistance from some guy and his supervisor from India... an American tech helper just gave me a runaround on fixing the remote.

I will never buy another HP, ever. And I will be recommending to anyone who is buying a laptop to not buy HP.

Mike J   April 7th, 2010 4:18 am ET

Ok lets get a few things strait. I'm dyslexic so no need for spelling comments.

PC: PC hardware in a slightly less than super awesome case with a great OS (XP and Win 7) for a honest price.

Mac: PC hardware in a shiny box at a rip off price with a OS that is fun but useless when you need to do weird stuff, Like program your cars ECU, or a Novac Speed control for a RC car or program a robot to get you a beer or anything geeky and fun.

So if you need a PHD computer (Push here dummy) then keep your mac. Since they lost Risk they are overpriced and crap.
If you have stuff to do, Get a Windows 7 powered computer.

Tablet/Sleight PCs in Windows all have a Ctrl-Alt-Del button on them All have SD and usb and 99% have webcams. Mine does and its 3 years old. not to mention daul touch (pen and finger support)

Mike J   April 7th, 2010 4:30 am ET

" I prefer what's better. And what is better is what is yet to come, this product is just plain old 1st gen crap."

Thats the problem. It is to much "that will do" lets get it out the door and make money and then release the product we should have sold in the first place.

No PCs are not perfect but they do not try to tel the consumer what they want. They let them decide for them selves as to what to do.

I like the idea of the ipad. But there is better out there, The Archos running both Windows and Android. The Asus touch screen tablet for 499 and there are more. These companys instead of wasting time and money on adverts and shiny packaging they put together a very good product.

rainynight   April 7th, 2010 4:37 am ET

HP slate an apple ipad killer. not that ipad a killer of anything selling 300000 at open with back track analyst covering up their misses. LOL

L. A.   April 7th, 2010 4:58 am ET

A little late to the party here, but I have noticed that Mac OS users seem to transition far more easily to using a Windows OS than vice versa. I can't help but wonder why that is, especially since the biggest difference between the two I notice on a daily basis is that Windows (XP) generally requires one mouse click more to finish a task than OSX does.

The iPad is not meant to replace a laptop or even netbook computer. It's essentially meant to make watching those movies and tv shows we download in iTunes easier to watch than on an iPod's teensy screen, while still maintaining a semblance of portability. The larger format also allows e-books and -zines to come into play.

All reports are that Windows 7 is fast and stable... If MS can gear a version of it towards the hardware limitations of slates, there's no reason that both the Windows and Mac camps can't have products to suit their tastes.

It'll be fun! Expensive, but fun!

Mike Steben   April 7th, 2010 8:36 am ET

It's important to understand what the iPad isn't or what it does not do well before you shell out $500+ of your hard earned money.

TJRedNeck   April 7th, 2010 8:59 am ET

@ Bob and Ted on April 5th (sorry I just now read this article), I make 9 figures and I use Linux, I'm better than both of you combined. (That ought to stir things up)

Mike J. – "Mac: PC hardware in a shiny box at a rip off price with a OS that is fun but useless when you need to do weird stuff, Like program your cars ECU, or a Novac Speed control for a RC car"

So, Mac is useless because you can't program a radio controlled car. Great argument there Dweeb McNimrod.

Troof   April 7th, 2010 9:06 am ET

Wow, retards? Fell better about yourself now? by they way, while you were nerding it up about how lame Macs are I was banging your wife.

Jeremy   April 7th, 2010 9:07 am ET

@Brian: If you got a BSOD with Vista, that was your own doing. Most likely the result of using not fully compatible hardware or using hardware that conflicts with one another.

Cullen   April 7th, 2010 10:02 am ET

with-in 5 years there are going to be about 3-5 different generations of the iPad so id hold off because you're wasting your money buying something that's in its "primative" stages for apple...and iPad? sounds like something a woman would use...hah

Mike   April 7th, 2010 10:15 am ET

HP makes great printers but the two computers I've had from them were both disasters. They use cheap parts to keep the final price down and garner more market share so the products don't last like they should.

It's going to be interesting to see what they come up with though, I understand that it's going to run Windows 7 or some version of that and I'm already having trouble with my 64bit Windows Home Premium dropping off bits and pieces of programs if you run them for too long. If they use some kind of dumbed down 7 it might be even worse.

And how do you protect yourself against viruses with this thing? You know it's going to be a major target from the day it releases.

dewd   April 7th, 2010 10:18 am ET

Phooey on these tablets. They will be squashed as soon as the next gen smart phones with 4" screens come out. I want a device that has a decent sized screen that I can carry with me anywhere I go to access the internet since I use it for everything from looking up review for stuff I"m thinking of buying while I'm in a store, email, corp CRM, doing research etc. etc. etc.

So I need something I can carry with me, and not in a "man-purse" either. Even if I'm at home when I want to access the web I want to access it now by pulling something out of my pocket, not looking for where I put my Ipad... I don't see much of a future for these things.

Apple should have put all of it's iPad resources into the next gen iPhone. 4" screen, replaceable battery, CDMA, 4G broadband, micro-sd support, 1G CPU, more mem, etc....

kirby444   April 7th, 2010 10:19 am ET

ok these are both dumb ideas my laptop cost 500 bucks and can do 10 times more than either or these all without getting my screen smugded up. but yay to technology i like ideas i just think these are a step backwards. and i personally have never had problems with either mac or windows and i believe any one that does should not be touching computers!!!

wanna bet? sorry but not everyone thinks like you about Mac, i personally have owned a mac and am now a full backer of PC. This device is going to be everything that the ipad is not... and more!

So feel free to wallow blindly in your i"mac"ination, meanwhile we'll be enjoy the real deal!

"Vernon Dozier" I have had 2 blue screens of death on the last week on my Dell M6300 – go figure, it was a device driver issue.... Running XP. Hard to get a blus screen when you only use your pc for spreadsheets and minesweeper I guess.

Anton   April 7th, 2010 11:22 am ET

iPad is really big iphone, oh no!!! BIG ipod – it can't make calls )) but you can wait one year, Apple will launch new ipad WITH CAM next year )) maybe – Slate is real device based on stable Win7 + 2 (!) cams, USB, FLASH, SD, 3G, WiFi – and even I CAN SEE MY FOLDERS! )))))

RonW   April 7th, 2010 12:41 pm ET

The big SHOW STOPPER here is that it runs Windows 7, which means it loses instant on/off capabilities that are so important in the tablet context. Also – will it have a hard drive or use memory? Again, hard drive will drain the battery. I've owned 2 tabletPC, and now the iPad. Hands down the iPad is the experience I had hoped the tabletPC would be, save for the lack of handwriting on iPad. Bottom line = iPad still wins.

bob banks   April 7th, 2010 2:43 pm ET

Chris   April 7th, 2010 9:35 pm ET

Nice, but you can count on it not being $499. Knowing HP it will be more like $4999.

kevin   April 8th, 2010 1:55 pm ET

One question – does it run a Microsoft Operating System?
No, thank-you!

Can you imagine how much fun that will be ? You need permission to take that picture. You need permission to touch the screen. You need permission to download that flash. You need permission to view this website. You need permission to pick me up. You need permission to turn me on. You need permission to organize your photos. You need permission to play this game.
But I don't need permission to smash you to little itty bitty pieces.

I'm a PC guy and also a huge fan of Apple products. That is until the I pad came out. Although it is very cool and I loved playing with it I just found myself wanting more to do with it after awhile. Then I started imagining all the expansions and all the things I could do had this and if it had that and if I could run flash or see flash video content online with it and the list goes on. Then I thought of the Slate and I'm like okay the slate answers all these if's with actual solutions and normal modalities of expandability without making you jump through hoops. Something that is more acceptable with the i-phone because, heck, it is after all just a hand help mobile phone device. But the I pad is significantly more than just a tiny little cool mobile handheld device you use as a primary cellular communication tool. The novelty of the ipad wore off for me soon after i got my hands on one and its more like just another cool accessory but given my needs I cant do the work with it that I can my pc, and that I believe I will be able to do with the Slate products.
